Leylines

Preface

Leylines are a strange phenomenon first recognized almost a millennia ago by budding arcane scholars. They are suggested to be physical manifestations of the magical connections latent in our world, known as The Weave. In this writing we will delve into the characteristics of Leylines, as well as how they manifest in the world, and how they can be utilized for various spells and rituals.

These materials include a map of locations suspected to be Leyline Crossings, compiled over many years' research by adventurers all over Monax'Len.

The Leyline

As established, a Leyline is usually defined as a line drawn between two points of magical or spiritual significance. It's unknown whether leylines form between points of strong magic, or whether a concentration of magic forms these Leyline Crossings. This is something we may never know. The formation of a Leyline is paradoxical in nature, and frankly, that nature is one of the things that make it so difficult to properly study them.

No one has ever managed to observe or track the growth or change of a Leyline, though a number have tried throughout history. Beings with the power have been observed to leech energy from Leylines, though this usually has some sort of detrimental effect on the surrounding environment. It's even been seen once or twice in the olden times of the very ground giving way where a Leyline supposedly rerouted around a settlement. However, it's entirely possible these accounts are inaccurate, or worse, entirely conjecture.

All we know for certain is that the power of Leylines can be sensed, characterized, and utilized by those with the magical aptitude to do so.

The Weave

The Weave isn't a physical material or force particularly, but more of a pattern magic users have found in the way that magic interacts with the world. It's given such a name to represent the way it covers all, touches every corner of existence, in a phenomenal, all-encompassing shroud.

The Weave interacts with all types of magic, regardless of if it's considered arcane or divine in nature. See, The Weave connects our gods as well, our monsters, our eldritch, and even our devils and demons. It is entirely neutral, a force that exists beyond the petty designation to boxes mortals fall back on when faced with the unknown.

All spellcasting interacts with The Weave. It is not itself holy or singularly powerful. It is simply the tether between things. The darkness between the stars.

Leyline Crossings

A Leyline Crossing is a location where these Leylines are said to intersect. Results of this phenomenon can include any number of magical anomalies, but almost always include the presence of heightened magical power in the local area. These qualities have been observed to include:

  • Particularly healthy crops, or virulent fauna

  • Natural formations with strange qualities

  • High concentration of rare minerals or magical reagents

  • Mages or casters feeling energized or sensing strange vibrations (Although, as a note, even non-magical individuals can feel a connection with leyline crossings)

  • Shifts in time or concept of time

  • Naturally active teleportation

  • Rifts opening into neighboring planes

This list is arranged from least to most severe of observed activity.

Archivist's Note: Any individual with testimony of anomalies that are not noted here or in common text are encouraged to connect with local scholarly resources to record and track local phenomena.
