Buying and Selling Magic Items

Captain Xendros trades in magical items quietly and carefully.

Under the Keoland–Iuz Trade Accord, Article 3: Trade Limitations, she is not permitted to buy or sell magical items without gaining permission and registering every transaction through Captain Fireborn. On paper, this keeps her dealings transparent and tightly controlled.

In practice, Xendros treats Article 3 as an obstacle to navigate rather than a rule to obey. She rarely handles illicit exchanges personally. Instead, she relies on two trusted agents:

  • Rutkus (Berserker) – a broad-shouldered half-orc dockhand who blends in easily among Saltmarsh’s laborers.

  • Voss (spy)– a silent, sharp-eyed human with a knack for disappearing into a crowd.

These two conduct her forbidden trades at the Empty Net, to avoid the garrison and Captain Fireborn. They never reveal who they work for, and all payments, appraisals, and arrangements are done in gold or sealed pouches. Most believe they work for Gellan Primewater.

Covert Curse

Any item procured through Xendros or her agents is cursed.

A subtle unholy mark links the item back to its source. While attuned, the bearer can be targeted by Xendros with detect thoughts at any range. The saving throw automatically fails, and the victim remains unaware of the intrusion.

The curse can be revealed only with an identify spell followed by a successful DC 25 Intelligence (Arcana) check.

Weekly Offerings

When approached discreetly, through Rutkus or Voss, Xendros brokers magical items for a 50 gp retainer each week. This cost covers haggling, covert meetings, and arrangements with northern contacts in Iuz. The retainer gives the party access to the items and first choice.

Each week she has the following stock available :

  • Two Common Items (select either Arcana, Armaments, or Implements)

  • One Uncommon Item

  • One Rare Item

Unsold items are shipped away on the next dark-hulled supply ship, returning to the hands of her superiors in Iuz’s realm.

Selling Items

Xendros also buys magical items for resale to the north.

She offers half her asking price, and each sale consumes a week while Rutkus or Barnack verify authenticity, secure the item, and arrange transport aboard a ship bound for the lands of Iuz.

All records vanish the moment they touch her hands.

Special Requests

Xendros can acquire specific magic items within 1d4 weeks. She requires half the fee up front.
Her baseline prices are:

Common

75 gp

Uncommon

300 gp

Rare

2,500 gp

Very Rare

25,000 gp

Legendary

50,000 gp

Gold is always acceptable—but favors are often more valuable to her. Sabotaging Keoland’s expansion, undermining Loyalist efforts, or diverting attention away from her activities can significantly reduce her asking price.
