The Fools Folly - Morndas, 07, Hearthveil, 554 - Session 1

Dugar, Paulus, Gobit, Leon, Spehn

The sixth week of adventures began at the Gilded Compass, where Thrain welcomed the returning adventurers with news of their recent successes. The first group had successfully rescued Saelin Mirelight from cultists, while the second had recovered supplies meant for the Satyrs in the north. With these victories behind them, Thrain offered the adventurers freedom to choose their next destination from several beacon locations, including the mountains where cultists had been spotted, the area cleared by Skazer past the dragon, and the location where gnolls had left mysterious magical scars in the earth.

Before departing, the party sought crucial information from both Pinna and Saelin Meyerlight. Pinna explained that curing Sphen's affliction would require pure water from deep earth wells, which could be obtained from dryads in dangerous mangroves who themselves needed assistance. Saelin, still recovering from her ordeal, provided chilling details about the Hollow Spire - a massive fortified city of cultists nestled in the tallest mountain peak. She described witnessing horrific rituals where four candles opened portals at a summoning circle, transforming sacrificed victims into shadow demons under the command of the powerful Sythravel.

The party ultimately decided to return to the mountain pass where Dugar and Ruth had previously encountered cultists, hoping to explore further and potentially find a back route to the cult stronghold or the ancient kingdom of Vale. They gathered supplies, with Paulus purchasing a draft horse and Dugar buying healing potions, before using Pinna's sigil stone to teleport back to the familiar mountain pass. Upon arrival, they discovered that the cultist bodies had been moved, with blood trails leading to a hidden cave entrance containing stairs that descended into darkness.

Rather than immediately explore the mysterious cave, the party decided to first complete Dugar's business with Queen Bargnot, traveling back through the mountain pass toward the goblin settlement. Along the way, Leon discovered an ancient pilgrim shrine carved into a fallen boulder, complete with unknown runes and a golden offering bowl filled with gems and gold. The shrine represented remnants of old pilgrimage routes to Siothruna from before the shattering, when the area was a destination for clergy of the Great Light.

Their arrival at the goblin gate that evening took a disastrous turn when Dugar presented Queen Bargnot with both cultist heads and the black moon pendants he had collected. The goblin queen's fury was immediate and terrifying upon seeing the pendants, as she realized these enchanted items allowed cultists to spy through them. She threw payment at Dugar and ordered a goblin soldier to run into the mountains with the cursed jewelry, knowing the poor creature was likely doomed. The goblins immediately began preparing for battle, closing their gates and readying their defenses.

Eetu explained the dire situation - the cultists now knew everything that had transpired since the pendants arrived at the goblin settlement. Queen Bargnot suggested the party intercept the approaching cultists in the mountain pass, as the enemy would likely follow the trail of their fallen comrades. Dugar grabbed a bottle of fire wine before departing, drinking it to gain the ability to breathe fire and Leon creating a makeshift molotov cocktail with the remaining liquid.

The party raced through the darkening mountain pass as night fell and the light-absorbing moon rose overhead. Paulus cast light on his spear to help navigate the treacherous terrain, while his divine senses detected the sounds of death and agony echoing from ahead. Leon's owl scouted forward and discovered the gruesome scene - the goblin messenger had been torn apart, his limbs scattered around his extinguished torch, while ten cultists advanced through the narrow canyon.

The adventurers positioned themselves strategically at a choke point with rock formations, with Dugar lifting Gobit onto a ten-foot tall boulder for a better vantage point. Sphen created an illusory rock pile for additional cover while the party prepared their ambush. As the cultists approached within range, Leon hurled his molotov cocktail into their ranks, igniting several enemies and illuminating the battlefield with dancing flames.

The battle erupted into chaos as Dugar charged forward in a rage while Sphen sat on his shoulder to deliver a devastating kick that instantly killed one cultist. An aberrant cultist with writhing tentacles emerging from his face unleashed psychic attacks that poisoned Dugar and paralyzed Paulus with dark magic. Eetu proved his magical training by successfully eliminating enemies with precise firebolts, while Gobit unleashed wild magical energies that created a rolling sphere of flame to control the battlefield.

The combat intensified as the aberrant creature's tentacles lashed out, grappling both Dugar and Sphen in shadowy appendages. Leon provided crucial support with his bow while using the terrain to stay hidden, and Paulus managed to break free from his paralysis to heal his wounded companions. Gobit's wild magic continued to surge unpredictably, at one point teleporting him to the astral plane before returning him with an additional eyeball growing from his forehead.

The tide turned when Sphen broke free from his restraints and delivered crushing blows with his maul, causing one enemy's head to explode into shadow. Dugar fought through his injuries with orcish determination, while Leon's precise strikes found their marks. The final cultist fanatic fell to Dugar's trident, ending the violent encounter as the last echoes of battle faded through the mountain pass.

In the aftermath, the party searched the fallen enemies and discovered substantial treasure, including an ornate necrolace with a glowing green gem and a star metal ring with magnetic properties. Paulus performed last rites over the cultist bodies before Dugar decapitated them all, planning to present the heads to Queen Bargnot as proof of their victory. They burned the remaining corpses and gathered the cursed pendants, placing them in the torn goblin's body where scavenging animals might provide the spying cultists with disturbing views.

The party returned to the goblin gate in the darkness, where Queen Bargnot greeted them from her tower with sword still drawn. Dugar dramatically dumped the bag of severed heads on the ground and breathed fire into the air, demonstrating their triumph over the cultist threat. The goblin queen's relief was palpable, but she explained that her people could no longer remain in their ancestral home now that the cultists knew their location.

Queen Bargnot requested sanctuary in Siothruna for her people, offering a substantial treasure as payment for protection. The party agreed to help relocate the goblins, with Gobit suggesting the Whispery Glen as a potential new home. They planned to present the situation to Thrain with a complete solution rather than just a problem, recommending that the guild prioritize clearing out the cultist threat so the goblins could eventually return home.

The goblin treasure proved substantial - nearly six hundred gold pieces, thirty platinum, and various precious gems including jaspers, blue quartz, and amethysts. The party decided to bring the entire offering to Thrain without taking any for themselves, demonstrating their commitment to helping the displaced goblins. They planned to use some of the eventual reward to identify the magical items they had recovered, particularly the mysterious necrolace and star metal ring.

Thrain accepted the goblin refugees and their generous offering, agreeing to display the gems in the guild's trophy room while distributing the monetary portion among the party members. After setting aside funds for magical item identification, each adventurer received a substantial reward for their efforts. The session concluded with the party having not only defeated a significant cultist threat but also forged a stronger alliance with the goblin community while uncovering valuable intelligence about their enemies' capabilities and the mysterious cave entrance that still awaited exploration.
