The Forgotten Depths

Entry CLII — The Satyrs’ Glade Mine Recovery (Azariel, Dugar, Lucy, Insufflo)

This entry consolidates multiple firsthand accounts regarding the recovery of miners lost beneath the Satyrs’ glades. Though initially categorized as a routine rescue following an underground collapse, subsequent events confirm the incident to be yet another manifestation of deeper corruption spreading through the lower tunnels of the Shattered Lands.

Expedition Members

The party consisted of Azariel (paladin of the Light), Dugar (orcish warrior), Lucy (bard and chronicler), and Insufflo (arcane practitioner of reserved disposition). Their stated objective was the retrieval of three miners believed trapped after a subterranean failure.

Three survivors at the surface reported overwhelming stench, an oppressive darkness, and unnatural screeching sounds. They refused to re-enter the tunnels.

Initial Descent and Troglodyte Presence

The expedition entered what the miners referred to as the “forgotten depths”—a term used with increasing frequency in recent reports. The party encountered troglodytes near the upper passages, along with the partial remains of one of the missing miners.

The troglodytes were dispatched quickly. Lucy’s account notes that the speed and decisiveness of the engagement left little opportunity for fear to take root. A personal effect belonging to the deceased miner—a necklace containing likenesses of family members—was recovered and taken by Azariel for return to the next of kin.

Abyssal Entity and Possessed Miners

Deeper within the tunnels, two surviving miners were found under the mental domination of a demonic entity described as green-skinned, predatory, and exerting enchantment rather than brute force. The creature’s influence caused memory loss in its victims, who recalled only strange sounds and sudden violence.

The entity was destroyed through coordinated action: Azariel and Dugar engaged directly, Insufflo revealed unexpected magical capability, and Lucy disrupted the creature’s concentration through bardic invocation. Azariel administered healing to one miner following the engagement.

During this phase, fungal growths were observed throughout the cavern. Their significance was not immediately understood.

Drow Interference and the Silent Outpost

While attempting to withdraw, the party encountered a dark elf later identified as Sorez Blacksword. After brief conversation in Elvish with Azariel, the miners were sent ahead under Lucy’s care while the party followed the drow deeper into the tunnels.

This led them to a small encampment occupied by two additional drow, several imprisoned miners, and a myconid. Hostilities commenced immediately upon confirmation of hostile intent. The drow were eliminated swiftly. Evidence recovered indicated the drow had been harvesting myconids to manufacture poisons.

Azariel recovered a text written in Undercommon during this engagement, presently held for review.

Contact with the Myconids

The rescued myconid—later called “Toad” by the party—demonstrated the ability to communicate telepathically, primarily with Dugar. Through this contact, the party was guided to a larger myconid colony and its leader.

The myconids proposed an alliance: in exchange for the destruction of a drow stronghold known as the Silent Outpost, they would offer a magical artifact and consider relocation to a safer territory. Dugar further proposed resettlement beneath Siuthruna, citing mutual benefit—clear tunnels for the city, protection for the myconids. The colony expressed cautious interest.

Conclusion and Assessment

The expedition succeeded in recovering the surviving miners and uncovering multiple threats operating beneath the Satyrs’ glades: troglodytes, abyssal entities, drow slavers, and evidence of organized exploitation of subterranean life.

Lucy’s account, while informal in tone, provides valuable observational detail—particularly regarding morale, non-hostile entities, and recovered artifacts. Azariel’s decisiveness and Dugar’s direct violence proved effective, though the repeated emergence of demonic influence beneath otherwise mundane sites remains deeply troubling.

This matter cannot be considered resolved. The Silent Outpost remains active, and further action will be required should Siuthruna intend to secure its lower reaches.

The darkness was driven back.
It was not removed.
