Light Shards
The Light Shard System
A soulbound relic unique to each adventurer.
__
Overview
Every adventurer in the Shattered Lands eventually discovers a Light Shard — a fragment of primordial radiance that resonates uniquely with their essence.
• Unique Bond: No two shards are the same. Each reflects its wielder’s soul, glowing with a personal hue.
• Growth: The shard grows more radiant as the character advances, unlocking new powers at key milestones.
• Soul Anchor: A Light Shard is more than a tool — it serves as a vessel for the wielder’s very essence, storing a spark of life to return them to the world if they fall.
• Seithril Setting: A shard may be set into a Seithril crafted setting, making it wearable or socketed into armor/gear.

Shard Growth & Milestones
Light Shards evolve alongside their wielder:
Level 6 — First Awakening (Ability Score Infusion)
• The shard attunes to its bearer’s body.
• Benefit: The wielder gains an Ability Score Increase (ASI) — either +2 to one ability, or +1 to two (up to 20).
• Flavor: The shard’s glow steadies, faintly pulsing in rhythm with the bearer’s heartbeat.
__
Level 11 — Second Awakening (Class Synergy)
• The shard deepens its resonance with the wielder’s class and fighting style.
• Benefit: Grants a class-boosting feature chosen with the GM to fit the character’s archetype.
o Examples:
A Rogue’s shard might grant an extra use of Cunning Action.
A Cleric’s shard could empower Channel Divinity or expand its range.
A Fighter’s shard might grant a second use of Action Surge (1/rest).
• Flavor: The shard now glows brightly when class features are used, as though feeding them.
__
Level 16 — Final Awakening (Unique Feat)
• The shard reveals a unique feat, designed collaboratively between player and GM to reflect the character’s story.
• Examples:
o Shard of the Stormblade — Gain a reaction attack when struck by lightning or thunder damage.
o Shard of the Undying Ember — When reduced to 0 HP, stay at 1 HP once per long rest.
o Shard of the Dreaming Mind — Gain resistance to psychic damage and advantage vs. charm/fear.
• Flavor: The shard shines with vibrant color, sometimes projecting faint motes of light in the air around its bearer.
__
Soul Anchor Function
• If a bearer dies, their essence flows into their Light Shard.
• While the shard remains intact, resurrection is always possible — even without a body — so long as the shard is present.
• Revival: A ritual or resurrection spell can call the essence back.
• If the shard is destroyed, the soul is scattered and normal resurrection applies.
__
Seithril Setting
• Light Shards can be placed into a Seithril jewel or crafted into weapons, amulets, rings, or armor.
__
GM Guidelines
• Tailoring: Each shard’s abilities at 10 and 15 should be designed collaboratively, themed to the player’s class and narrative arc.
• Balance: Keep shard boosts in line with feats and class features — strong, but not overwhelming.
• Story Hooks: Shards can be targeted, stolen, sought after by cults, or used in forgotten magics. They are both treasure and vulnerability.
• Visual Growth: Use shard color and intensity as a storytelling tool — from dim ember (Level 5) to radiant beacon (Level 15).

The Light Shard system gives every character their own soulbound relic that grows with them, reinforcing personal narrative arcs while also functioning as a safety net against permanent death.
