Gobit, Grobbo, Sphen, Paulus
The adventure began in the Great Hall of the Gilded Compass, where Thrain warmly welcomed two new members to their organization. Paulus, a cleric serving an unknown god, and Grobbo, a halfling sorcerer with a tragic past involving his murdered merchant parents, were introduced to veteran adventurers Sphen and Gobit. Grobbo demonstrated his fire magic by creating flames from his fingertips and showed off a half-broken mechanical owl toy he had crafted, while Paulus unconsciously touched his holy symbol as he spoke of his faith.
Their introductions were interrupted when Mayor Oswald rushed into the hall with urgent news. A convoy carrying trade goods to the satyr settlements in the north had been ambushed and ransacked. The convoy consisted of three wagons with eight people total - six traders and two guards - all of whom were now missing or dead. Thrain immediately asked the newly formed party to investigate the attack and put an end to whatever was stopping their trade routes. The group eagerly accepted the mission, with Grobbo excitedly agreeing to help and Paulus offering his services in the name of justice.
Before departing, Thrain provided each party member with tokens to redeem healing potions from the local alchemist. Grobbo used his mage hand spell to tug on Thrain's shoulder when he had walked away, calling him back to ask for supplies and advice. At the alchemist shop, the weary clerk behind the counter was grateful for the Gilded Compass's positive impact on business and readily exchanged their tokens for healing potions. Grobbo had to climb onto his backpack to reach the counter due to his small halfling stature.
The party then visited Edmund Stein's animal breeding business, where they were greeted by his teenage daughter Isolda. She became excited upon learning they worked with the Gilded Compass and was eager to hear about their adventures. In a touching moment, Gobit purchased a trained mastiff for Grobbo as a gift, leading to an emotional hug between the two halflings. They acquired two mastiffs originally named Rufus and Fido, but successfully renamed them Trinket and Timbits respectively. Both Grobbo and Sphen attempted to ride their new companions bareback around the farm, resulting in comedic falls that left Grobbo with minor injuries that Paulus tended to with medical care.
Thrain provided detailed information about the attacked convoy before their departure. The convoy had been traveling to establish trade relations with the satyrs, particularly hoping to obtain their special wine recipes and exotic plants for the local alchemist and herbalist. A scout had reported finding one cart burned to ash with three bodies at the scene, while tracks and blood trails led northwest from the attack site. The party examined a large map in the Great Hall showing the explored territories around Sia Thruna, and Paulus sketched a rough copy for reference during their journey.
The party departed through the north gate of Siothruna, following the ancient cobblestone road that had been overgrown for five hundred years since the city's isolation ended. Trees grew through the cracked stones, and the landscape resembled a mix of Texas prairie and English moor with rolling hills and sparse vegetation. As they traveled, Grobbo and Sphen foraged for valuable plants, with Grobbo discovering black lichen growing on dead wood and stone, while Sphen found giant hogweed with white umbrella-shaped flowers. Paulus took detailed notes of their surroundings while walking, and Grobbo spotted wisps of smoke in the distance that marked their destination.
Upon reaching the convoy attack site around midday, they found a scene of devastation. A cart still smoldered while three bodies lay scattered among bloodstains and disturbed earth. Paulus reverently moved the bodies aside and said prayers over each victim, feeling a deep burden for justice. Grobbo investigated the scene and discovered paw prints mixed with dried blood and mud, along with hair similar to their mastiff companions. Through careful examination, the party determined these were not wolf tracks but belonged to some kind of humanoid bestial creatures. Sphen found a coin purse containing gold and silver pieces under one of the bodies, which Grobbo took despite Paulus's suggestion that it should be saved for the victims' families.
The party decided to take a lunch break at the convoy site, with Grobbo sharing pastries he had purchased and Paulus eating his daily rations. During this time, Grobbo performed a lengthy ritual to summon his owl familiar named JJ, while Sphen fed his pet ochre jelly. Their peaceful meal was interrupted when Paulus noticed rustling in the grass behind them and heard a low whine. Grobbo used his mage hand to part the brush, revealing five wild boars that immediately charged their position.
The ensuing battle was fierce but brief. Sphen and his mastiff Timbits worked together to bring down the first boar, with the dog delivering a killing bite to its throat. Grobbo retreated and cast firebolts, accidentally starting a grass fire with one missed shot. Gobit unleashed powerful magic, his chromatic orb bursting one boar into flames and leaping to engulf another. The burning boars became frenzied, attacking desperately as flames consumed them. Paulus fought with his mace while using his divine magic to force enemies to miss critical attacks. The battle ended with Sphen crushing the final boar's skull with his maul while Paulus quickly extinguished the spreading fire with a freezing spell.
After the combat, the party harvested what they could from the defeated boars. Sphen collected tusks and pelts while everyone took portions of meat for rations. The mastiffs ate their fill, and Sphen even fed some to his ochre jelly. As evening approached, they continued following the convoy tracks deeper into increasingly hostile terrain. The landscape transformed dramatically - grasslands gave way to dry, barren earth, trees became gnarled with sickly orange leaves and thorns, and strange shrubs appeared with flowing tendrils and glowing purple pods.
Using his mage hand for safety, Gobit collected several of the mysterious purple pods while avoiding the dangerous tentacle-like appendages. Sphen carefully harvested blood-red sap from the thorny trees using his dagger, filling a vial with the substance that seemed to have alchemical properties. The environment grew increasingly otherworldly and threatening as they traveled, with the very air feeling hot and oppressive.
As darkness fell, Grobbo sent his owl familiar to scout for suitable camping locations. JJ discovered an outcropping of thorny trees that had grown together to form a natural shelter, as well as a large scar-like opening in the earth. The party chose the tree shelter, with Grobbo having his mastiff dig a small protective hole near the base. They gathered thorny wood for a fire, which Grobbo lit with his magic, and established watch rotations with Sphen and Grobbo taking the first shift.
The campfire's smoke produced a sweet, molasses-like scent that proved to be more than just pleasant. While the two halflings on watch resisted its effects, the sleeping party members fell victim to terrifying hallucinations. Gobit dreamed of multiple copies of himself that mocked and attacked him, tearing at his flesh, while Paulus experienced swarms of flies crawling over his skin and into his mouth and nose. When awakened, both continued to experience these nightmarish visions until Paulus created a magical rainstorm that extinguished the fire and cleared the toxic smoke.
Their rest was further disturbed when Paulus heard the sound of a rabbit screaming in the distance. Gobit's darkvision revealed three pairs of eyes in the darkness, and Paulus cast a light spell on a pebble, throwing it to illuminate three gnolls standing over freshly killed rabbits. Using his divine magic, Paulus created booming voices, ground tremors, and thunder to wake the party and intimidate their enemies. The gnolls responded with war cries and charged toward the camp.
The battle with the gnolls proved more challenging than the boar encounter. The humanoid creatures were armed with spears and longbows, forcing the party to close distance while under missile fire. Sphen and his mastiff again worked as an effective team, with Timbits suffering a painful nose injury from an overeager attack. Gobit's magic proved devastating, his chromatic orb leaping between enemies and setting them ablaze. Grobbo coordinated attacks with his owl familiar while Paulus attempted to weaken enemies with necrotic magic. The fight ended when Sphen knocked the final gnoll prone and Gobit finished it with a firebolt enhanced by his racial fury.
Searching the defeated gnolls revealed crucial information about the convoy attack. Each carried gold pieces, and their leader wore a bone necklace carved with runes that Paulus identified as dedicating the wearer to "the Lord of the Night." Most importantly, they found a scroll case containing three documents: a manifest of the convoy's goods, a map fragment showing a location called Skuldrath, and a warning note written in goblin script.
Gobit translated the goblin warning, which spoke of a dangerous pit with wrong smells, trees that screamed at night, and an unnatural howling that was neither wolf nor hyena. The message, signed by "Zigzog the Quick," advised avoiding the eastern areas and going west instead. This revelation prompted Grobbo to share that his owl had spotted a large scar in the earth during their earlier scouting - likely the very pit mentioned in the warning.
The convoy manifest confirmed these gnolls were responsible for the attack, listing wine, lumber, tools, furs, and various trade goods that had been stolen. It also mentioned a mysterious chest whose contents remained unknown. The map fragment showed Skuldrath's location to the west and helped Paulus update his crude sketch of the region. With this new intelligence about the dangerous areas ahead and the identity of their enemies, the party prepared to continue their investigation, knowing they were dealing with creatures serving some dark master called the Lord of the Night.
As the night grew quiet around their camp, the party had successfully gathered crucial evidence about the convoy attack and eliminated one of the gnoll hunting parties responsible. However, the goblin warning and the ominous references to the Lord of the Night suggested that greater dangers lay ahead in their mission to secure the trade routes and rescue any surviving convoy members.
