Capture Caravans Cont. - Morndas, 01, Hearthveil, 554 - Session 1.5

Gobit, Grobbo, Sphen, Paulus, Ignara

The adventuring party of the Gilded Compass awoke in the arid wasteland where they had made camp among the sparse grave thorn trees with their sickeningly sweet blossoms and wispy ash trees. After Paulus and Gobit completed their successful night watch, the group prepared for the day ahead. Grobbo sent his owl familiar JJ to scout the area from above, revealing the continuing cart tracks they had been following and small cave-like scars dotting the landscape.

As they broke their fast with bacon cooked over Paulus's magical fire, the party organized themselves for travel. Paulus crafted a makeshift saddle from rope and equipment to prevent another riding mishap, which he gave to Grobbo. With Sphen leading on his mastiff, they followed the tracks through the increasingly desert-like terrain, where the landscape grew more arid as they traveled north.

The party reached a steep bluff overlooking a vast valley below. From this vantage point, Sphen spotted their quarry in the distance - two wagons being pulled slowly across the valley floor about a mile away, with dust clouds and moving figures visible around them. The wagons appeared to be moving at a pace they could overtake, so the party began their descent down the sandy bluff. While most managed the treacherous climb successfully, Grobbo tumbled from his dog and suffered some bruising.

Once in the valley, Grobbo sent JJ ahead for closer reconnaissance. The owl's keen eyes revealed crucial details: two wagons bound together with rope and chain, pulled by two giant hyenas, with six gnolls total - including one pack leader, a driver, and four warriors. Most disturbing of all, three prisoners were chained behind the wagons, being dragged along the ground. Grobbo cast a ritual to comprehend the gnolls' language and overheard them speaking of treasure, though he also caught the ominous names "Skuldrath" and "Yeenoghu" - the latter being a demonic entity he recognized from Paulus’ religious studies.

As the party watched in horror, one of the gnolls suddenly ran back to the prisoners and drove his weapon through the chest of the third captive, killing him instantly before breaking the body free from the chains. This brutal act spurred the party into action. They attempted to sneak closer but were spotted by the gnoll guards when they were still about two hundred feet away from the caravan.

Combat erupted as the gnolls let out their distinctive barking howls - sounds like a cross between hyena laughter and human voices. The gnoll pack lord charged toward the party while his warriors followed. Sphen rode his mastiff into battle, and his loyal hound managed to knock the pack lord prone with a vicious bite to the legs. Sphen then delivered devastating blows with his maul, using his combat training to strike twice before tactically withdrawing.

The battle intensified as gnoll warriors closed in, hurling bone javelins that whistled through the air. Meanwhile, one of the giant hyenas broke free from its harness and savagely attacked the remaining prisoners, its powerful jaws crushing bones as it bit into the neck and shoulder of one captive, who fell unconscious from the grievous wounds. The other prisoner, a young woman named Ignara, desperately tried to escape her chains but found them too secure.

Ignara proved her magical prowess by creating a masterful illusion - the sound of a war horn echoing across the battlefield. The deception was so convincing that it drew the attention of the giant hyena and several gnolls, who turned away from the party to investigate the phantom reinforcements. This tactical brilliance gave the party a crucial advantage in the ongoing fight.

The tide of battle turned when Grobbo's firebolt found its mark, striking the gnoll pack lord directly in his open mouth as he howled. Smoke poured from the creature's eyes as the magical fire consumed him from within, and he collapsed dead. Gobit then unleashed a devastating series of chromatic orbs, the magical energy crackling between multiple targets and dealing massive damage to the gnoll warriors. His wild magic surged unpredictably, at one point transforming him into a potted plant with fiery-colored petals.

Sphen and his mastiff worked in perfect harmony, the dog's powerful jaws latching onto gnoll throats while Sphen's maul crushed skulls and bones. One particularly dramatic kill saw Sphen swing his weapon overhead and drive a gnoll straight into the ground with bone-shattering force. As gnolls began to flee, Grobbo's owl familiar swooped down to deliver precise firebolt attacks, igniting one fleeing enemy's back like a fuse until flames consumed his entire body.

During the chaos, Ignara managed to break free from her chains using her own magical fire, the intense heat melting through the metal bonds. She then used her druidic abilities to speak with the remaining giant hyena, convincing the confused beast that everything was just a dream. The creature stopped its charge and began walking in circles, shaking its head in bewilderment before eventually fleeing the battlefield.

The final moments of combat saw Paulus deliver a killing blow with his spear, driving it through a gnoll's neck and out through its mouth as the creature tried to escape. The last giant hyena was brought down by combined magical attacks from the party, Ignara's final firebolt engulfing the beast in flames until it collapsed as smoldering ash.

With their enemies defeated, the party began the grim but necessary task of searching the bodies and wagons. They found the gnoll pack lord carried a bone whip that radiated intimidation, spiked hide armor, and a small obsidian idol of the demon Yeenoghu. The warriors yielded various weapons, silver pieces, and trinkets including bone dice and a crude map showing gnoll pits. Most significantly, they discovered a hidden chest beneath the wagon seat containing three hundred gold pieces and five hundred silver pieces.

The wagons themselves proved to be a treasure trove of supplies originally destined for an enchanted glade of satyrs. Twenty sacks of grain, barrels of preserved food, live chickens and goats, water barrels, iron goods, lamp oil, and various other provisions filled the carts. Hidden compartments revealed additional healing potions and a locked chest containing chain mail armor. The party also found a banner bearing the noble crest of Siothruna, confirming these were supplies from their home city.

Ignara revealed her story to the party - she had been part of an envoy from the Gilded Compass traveling to visit satyrs in the north when the gnolls attacked their caravan. She was a young druid seeking adventure and knowledge of the natural world, drawn by the promise of visiting an enchanted forest. The attack had killed most of her companions, leaving only herself and one other survivor who had perished during the rescue.

Before departing, Grobbo sent his owl to scout in the direction the gnolls had been traveling. The familiar returned with disturbing news - the landscape ahead grew increasingly corrupted and scarred, like a festering wound spreading poison across the land. The terrain appeared scabbed and veined with corruption emanating from some deeper source. Wisely, the party decided not to investigate further.

The party divided their newfound wealth equally among all five members, including Ignara in recognition of her aid during the battle. They burned the gnoll bodies for cleansing while Paulus performed last rites over the fallen prisoners. Using Paulus's carpentry skills, they repaired one wagon to transport the bodies of the Siothruna residents back home, while loading all the supplies into the other cart for transport via the city's teleportation circle.

The return journey to Siothruna proved uneventful, the party successfully delivering both the recovered supplies and the bodies of their fallen comrades. They brought word to their superiors about the gnoll threat and the ominous corrupted lands beyond, adding crucial intelligence to the Gilded Compass's understanding of the dangers lurking in the wilderness. The mission, while costly in lives, had been a success - they had rescued one survivor, recovered valuable supplies, and eliminated a dangerous gnoll war party that had been terrorizing travelers in the region.
