The Conclave

The Conclave is the overarching organization uniting and representing active magical practitioners throughout Kildar. It acts as a powerful, often secretive, but undeniably influential alliance of sorcerers, alchemists, and arcane magic users that spans the continent, from the bustling city of Brell to far-flung regions everywhere the weave of magic touches.

Goals, Aspirations & Fears

Ego, power and status are the driving forces behind the individuals within the Conclave of Mages. The mages strive to increase their arcane knowledge and powers, while balancing the delicate political dance with the other factions to not draw too much attention from the Eldritch Inquisition

Many an ambitious sorcerer has ended up in the dungeons of the Eldritch Inquisition for practicing 'evil magic'. As a result the Conclave has banned the practice of necromancy, and the council seat of Arch-Necromancer has been empty.

The Conclave looks with great excitement at the return of the Fey and the Shadowfellian Exodus and all the planar- and wild-magic. They generally see it as an opportunity for more power and knowledge. But are weary of the influence of the Eldritch Inquisition and a potential ban on planar magic.

Structure & people

Ones social status within the Conclave is decided by onces magical prowess and so the upper positions of the organisations are filled with powerfull mages. The conclave is led by the Great-Council of Mages, with one council seat for each school of magic:

  • Abjuration – Protective magic that create barriers, wards, and negate harmful effects.

    • Vaerith Emberclaw

  • Conjuration – Summoning creatures, objects, or teleportation magic.

    • Name: Aranthor Deyne
      Race: Human
      Age: 65 jaar
      Motivation: As Archmage of Conjuration, he dedicated his life to the summoning of creatures and objects to defend Kildar from otherworldly realms.
      Drive: Aranthor believes that true power lies not in destruction, but in the capacity to forge new opportunities and alliances. He uses teleportation and summoning to gain a strategic edge in times of need. Still, he fears that his call to powerful entities might attract something which cannot be controlled.

  • Divination – Magic of knowledge, insight, and seeing the unseen.

    • Name: Aelthir Dawnseer
      Race: High Elf
      Age: 187 jaar
      Motivation: His Divination-magic is rooted in the ancient oracles of Il-Heban, supplying him with visions that force him to guide the future.
      Drive: He feels bound to his destiny. The knowledge he possesses [about the future](?), and the desire to choose his own tearing him apart.

      • The original Dutch does not specifically state that his knowledge is about the future. Some mild editorializing took place here to make the text flow nicer. Feel free to delete if deemed unimportant.

  • Enchantment – Influencing and charming the minds of others.

    • Name: Sylvaris Moonveil
      Race: Eladrin
      Age: 236
      Motivation: He uses Enchantment magic to bring harmony and joy to Kildar, and influence its inhabitants for the sake of peace and quiet.
      Drive: Desires his enchantments to open hearts, but wrestles with the temptation to use his magic for personal gain.

  • Evocation – Manipulating energy to create powerful elemental and force effects, mostly damage.

    • Name: Kaelthas Firebrand
      Race: Tiefling
      Age: 136 jaar
      Motivation: His Evocation magic channels the elements to protect Kildar against her enemies and test the limits of his power.
      Drive: Kaelthas wants to understand magic items, to channel their magical potential to push the boundaries of Evocation magic beyond what was previously thought possible to protect Kildar.

  • Illusion – Creating false sensory effects to deceive or mislead.

    • Name: Nyxara Veilborn
      Race: Shadar-kai (Shadowfell)
      Age: 214 jaar
      Motivation: She uses Illusion magic to blur the lines between reality and shadow, and uses this to reveal - or hide - secrets.
      Drive: Nyxara is hellbent on preventing somebody like Umbraxis from taking over the Shadowfell. She uses her magic to battle darkness and keep the balance.

      • This one also was a bit difficult to translate. The phrase I translated into "to battle darkness" is more literally translated into "to battle dark powers", but given the prominence of light and darkness as theme, I choose the former. Whatever's the case, there's a light/dark theme here, laid on thick.

  • Necromancy – Banned - Manipulating life force, death, and the undead.

    • This seat is vacant, there is currently no Archmage of Necromancy

  • Transmutation – Altering the properties of creatures or objects, shape-changing and transformation magic.

    • Name: Seraphiel Luminar
      Race: Aasimar
      Age: 116 jaar
      Motivation: He harnasses Transmutation magic to form and improve matter and creatures alike, often to enrich the lives of others - or to save them.
      Drive: Seraphiel feels a sacred calling to unlock the potential of those around him, though he still struggles with the responsibilities afforded to him by such power.

Positions in the council are for life, and when a seat becomes vacant, any practicionar of that school of magic can put themselves forward as a canditate. A congress will be held and all participants of the congress who are of that school of magic may vote. The person with the most votes is appointed to the seat.

The council votes on binding decrees and the will of the council is final. Any who defy it face expulsion from the conclave and are branded 'persona non grada'. Which will usually mean a one way trip to the dungeons of the Eldritch Inquisition.
