S12 - Into the Vale

Summary

The Oddfellows return to Dawnspire with Brezug and the remaining Black Goo, debriefing the Aegis Archive and Lysa, assistant to Benefactor Halver. With Voss’s operation ended but key questions unresolved, attention shifts to a growing threat closer to home.

Reports from travelers confirm worsening conditions in Mosswater Vale. The forest has become unreliable, with strange behavior, missing travelers, and signs of spreading corruption pointing to an active problem.

The party travels west into the Vale, where Fhino returns to his home village and shares insight into faerie history tied to the Great Tree, beneath whose roots their people endured the Scourge. From the elders, the party learns the corruption appears strongest in the northeastern forest, closer to the coast.

Seeking more answers, they visit a nearby druid circle, only to find it in disarray and its leader missing. With few clear leads and the threat growing, the party chooses to move directly toward the source of the corruption.

Return to Dawnspire

The party returns to Dawnspire with Brezug and the remaining samples of Black Goo. They debrief with the Aegis Archive and Lysa Morren, assistant to Benefactor Halver, sharing what they learned of Voss, the unknown buyer, and the nature of the substance itself.

Lysa is especially interested in the unidentified sorcerer and Voss’s mystery contact, but the party has little to offer beyond what they observed through the portal.

With the immediate crisis contained but several threads unresolved, the Archive shares additional findings. An expedition to the Whitecap under-island vault confirms the Black Goo originated there. The site has since been secured and placed under guard to prevent further spread.

Reports from the Vale

As the party considers next steps, reports from travelers point to increasing trouble in Mosswater Vale. The forest has grown unreliable. Paths shift. Sounds carry in unexpected ways. Travelers have gone missing.

The Vale is Fhino’s home and lies near Shepherd’s Table. Both he and Shepherd are motivated to address the threat directly.

Fhino’s Village

The party travels up the coast from Dawnspire to the edge of Mosswater Vale, then west along its southern boundary to reach Fhino’s home village. There, they learn more of faerie culture and history, centered on the Great Tree.

During the long centuries of the Scourge, the faeries survived in hibernation beneath its roots, preserved until it was safe to return.

The elders speak cautiously about the forest’s current condition. They have felt the change and believe the corruption is strongest to the northeast, closer to the coast.

They point the party toward two possible sources of knowledge:

  • a druid circle to the east

  • a local witch who lives within the Vale

The Druid Circle

The party travels east to the druid circle, hoping for guidance.

Instead, they find it in disarray. The circle is unsettled, its leader missing. The remaining druids are uncertain and strained, with no clear understanding of what has caused the shift in the forest.

A Direction Forward

With no definitive answers and conditions worsening, the party chooses to move toward the source.

The corruption has a direction. They follow it.

Closing

The threat in Mosswater Vale is no longer distant. It is active, localized, and worsening.

The Oddfellows turn from pursuit to investigation, moving into a region where even the land cannot be fully trusted.
