Dr. Susan Hastings, a 45-year-old historian and CIA consultant, had always been driven by an insatiable desire to acquire knowledge, even to her detriment. She earned her History degree from Georgetown, an M.A. from University College London, and a Ph.D. in Assyriology and Cuneiform Studies at the University of Chicago. Her expertise in the deep history of the Near East led her to consult for the State Department and the CIA in the hope of fostering communication and providing context for better decision-making by Americans in the region.
As Susan's work progressed, she stumbled upon a dangerous secret: the existence of the Choronzon Cult, a degenerate group devoted to the worship of the monstrous cosmic entity Yog-Sothoth. The cult members sought to summon and interact with the horrific, enigmatic creatures born of Yog-Sothoth, otherworldly beings that could pass as human for a time but ultimately revealed their grotesque, inhuman nature. Susan's investigations eventually caught the attention of Delta Green, who enlisted her help in uncovering the cult's ancient and terrifying secrets.
Five years ago, when Susan was 40, her life took a tragic turn. While she was deeply involved in exposing the mysteries and secrets of the Choronzon Cult, they became aware of her efforts to expose them. In retaliation, they orchestrated a devastating attack on her family. The cult members sent one of the cosmic horrors birthed by Yog-Sothoth, an unspeakable abomination that defied human understanding, to her home. There, it brutally murdered her husband, Ronald Gahm, and their two children, Samantha (age 5) and Riley (age 7). The entity then performed vile rituals and fed upon their life essence, leaving only mangled remains behind.
When Susan discovered the horrific scene upon returning home, she immediately contacted Delta Green for assistance. Sterret Gwin was dispatched to aid her. As Susan and Gwin investigated the scene, they were confronted by the monstrous cosmic horror. Its grotesque form seemed to writhe and shift as if reality itself rejected its very existence.
Realizing the immense danger they were in, Susan and Gwin quickly devised an improvised plan to evade the creature. Using her knowledge of ancient rituals, Susan drew a protective sigil on the ground, momentarily weakening the creature's connection to our reality. Seizing this opportunity, Gwin pulled a flash grenade from his tactical gear and tossed it at the creature. The resulting explosion of bright light and deafening noise disoriented the horror and allowed them to escape its clutches.
Although the creature was not permanently defeated, it was forced to retreat and regroup, buying Susan and Gwin valuable time to regroup and plan their next course of action. Their resourcefulness in the face of such an otherworldly threat allowed them to survive, albeit with a harrowing reminder of the dangers that lurk in the darkness.
Now, Susan continues her work with Delta Green, using her expertise to help investigate and combat the unimaginable threats posed by ancient cults and otherworldly entities. Despite the immense personal loss she has suffered, she remains determined to uncover the truth and protect the world from the darkness that hides in the shadows. Her pursuit of knowledge, even to her detriment, drives her to face the horrors that threaten humanity, no matter the cost.
