In an instant, a feeling of dread washed over the group. Qasim, Jamie, and Nasser felt their skin prickling as the hair on the back of their necks stood on end.
Nolan was standing a few feet away, a deep frown etched onto his face. His usual steely eyes now displayed an uncharacteristic uncertainty. He was the first to feel it - a sudden heaviness in the air, like the electric charge before a storm.
A low, unnatural buzz filled the air, the sound echoing and bouncing in a way that defied physics. It seemed to be everywhere and nowhere all at once, a discordant melody that set their teeth on edge.
Without warning, Nolan's body jerked spasmodically, his eyes widening in surprise and fear. An unseen force gripped him, causing his strong muscles to tense under the strain. He reached out a hand, his fingers clawing at nothingness. His breath hitched in his throat as he fought to shout a warning, to call for help, but all that emerged was a ragged gasp.
To Qasim, Jamie, and Nasser, Nolan seemed to flicker in and out of their sight. One moment he was there, straining against an invisible foe, and the next he was gone. The transition was jarring, disorientating, making them question their own perception.
And then Nolan was back, but something was wrong. His eyes were glassy, unfocused, his body swaying on the spot. A sickening, wet squelch echoed around them as something erupted from his body - a jumble of metallic, insect-like appendages that were at once part of him and yet alien.
Nolan's body convulsed once more and then he was gone, pulled into an unseen vortex, leaving only the nauseating sound of that buzzing behind. Qasim, Jamie, and Nasser could only watch in horrified silence, the reality of what they'd just witnessed struggling to take root.
Even as their minds reeled, trying to make sense of the impossible, a strange fog descended upon them, blurring their memories. The buzzing receded, replaced by the familiar sounds of the world they knew. When they blinked, the image of Nolan's terrified eyes was gone, as though erased from existence. They stood there, in the aftermath, a sense of confusion and unplaced dread lingering. Nolan was gone, and none of them could quite remember why.
