Campaign Primer

The Wyrm of the North is a campaign about mysterious artifacts, powerful dragons, and the group of heroes that saves the world from disaster. The story's main themes are climate, greed, and heroism. This story takes place in The Divine Era, 300PGC (Post Great Collapse).

Our story takes place in The Divine Era of Eirlysia. An era of renewal, revival, and change. The world is finally starting to settle down from the Great Collapse, an event where the god of fear Agrismal shattered and took down the Pantheon of Beasts with him. Slowly but surely, powerful mortals are ascending to godhood by appeasing The Ancients. Most recently, Solariel built a great tower in the World's Eye, a tower so large it pierced the heavens. The Ancients celebrated this great feat by granting him power over the sun.

Technology is rare and fickle. Though a great deal is known about alchemy, magic, and medicine, the world has not yet seen the likes of guns, airships, and other advanced technology.

Any questions about this so far?

Expectations and Playstyle

What do you like about combat?

Infrequent larger scale fights - frequent mini fights - minmaxxing - strategical combat

Ewout: A wide variety of combat, different objectives, not a big combat every session.

Sanne: Agrees with Ewout, wants to feel useful.

Zeena: Smaller fights that build up to a big fight.

Marco: Not a fight every session, should be fun & varied.

What do you like about roleplay?

Politics - socialising and meeting NPCs - dynamics with other PCs - complex stories and developing characters

Sanne: Everything! Wants to roleplay a lot, loves drionking at a tavern RP.

Ewout: Used to less RP heavy, finds it a little difficult. Investigating, social combat.

Zeena: No experience, but would like to try it out.

Marco: No experience, would like to RP.

What do you like about exploration?

Dungeon delving - discovering the world and its lore - finding/making treasure and magic items - puzzles and riddles - traps

Zeena: A balance of all of the above.

Marco: Character is a dungeon completionist.

Sanne: Slut for magic items.

Ewout: Puzzles with rewards (don't have to be good). Exploration is fun, walking around a forest with nothing but a random encounter table for sessions long is not.

What tone would we like the campaign to have?

A non-reformed gilded world. Evil and dark lies beneath a pretty surface, dark moments and harsh consequences. Suffering and misery are commonplace.

What kind of pacing would you guys like?

  • Fast-paced: Mostly main plot, with the occasional sidequest for a character arc.
  • Medium-paced: A 60/40 mix between main plot and sidequests, not all sidequests relate to a character arc. Most sidequests are resolved in a handful of sessions.
  • Slow-paced: A 40/60 mix between main plot and sidequests, sidequests may become a full side storyline that draws out over multiple sessions.

Sanne: Main plot main thing, backstory parts are nice too.

Ewout: Ramp it up, sidequests decrease as the campaign goes on.

Zeena: Loves sidequests, bigger ones occasionally.

Marco: Backstory quests are important.

Marco & Zeena: Want to help characters in the world and focus on things that don't directly help the party. Make the world feel alive.

What are your expectations of your fellow players?

Aspen: Be on time, be prepared, be engaged at the table, let us know if you're having a bad day

Sanne: Let us know if someone is hogging the spotlight and if you'd like more time in it. You don't have to be perfect!

Ewout: Value and take everyone's opinion seriously. Vote when the party is split, don't get stuck on one thing for too long.

Marco: Give each other the spotlight

What are your expectations of the GM?

Sanne: Wants to level to 4 quickly. Wants to pitch in financially when necessary!

Zeena: Tutorial level within the campaign.

Marco: Harsh and difficult consequences for our actions.

How would you like to handle character death?

Dead is dead, pact with a powerful entity to return, unconcious but not fully dead, etc.

Decide in the moment, feel it out first. Don't want to die to something dumb.

Mechanics and Gameplay

Help! I don't like my character build, can I change it?

As long as you discuss with the GM beforehand, you'll basically always get a yes to changing your build. Whether it be a feat, a spell, or your whole class, I care about you having fun at the table!

How difficult would you like combat to be?

Meatgrinder to baby mode

65/100, a slight challenge. Encounters will be Moderate to Severe. Monsters should be played in character, if they would attack a downed character they should!

Until which level would you like to play?

The lower the more realistic, though we can do timeskips and level jumps near the end

Aim for level 15, but feel it out as the game goes on.
