North of Kundar’s badlands extends a wild and wide prairie and savannah landscape, which the locals call Arva. It is inhabited by roaming tribes of centaurs, the Arvaneen. Each tribe is a nation in themselves, and they roam the Great Grass Sea in pursuit of migrating herds of elephants and water holes that the seasonal rains replenish. The rainy season is followed by a heat season that features frequent prairie fires that drives the migrations. It also drives the tribes frequent internecine warfare as they compete for hunting grounds and access to water as the remaining watering holes during the heat season are the very few safe places to rest and recouperate. Defeated tribes may then migrate south toward the treacherous safety of the badlands, and toward the outposts of Kundar that are then frequently raid for supplies, crafts and most importantly, metal products, which the tribes don't produce themselves for lack of mines and permanent settlements.
Geography, Climate, Flora and Fauna
Geography and Flora: The land is a flat, wide, endless savannah as far as the eyes can see. There are some small groves of large Tamarak trees, clustered around watering holes, but the defining feature is endless grassland, the Great Grass Sea. The Tamarak’s fruit is an important source of food to the various inhabitants of the savannah, as well as the skin’s fibrous properties, making it an important raw material for the centaurs’ craftings.
Climate: The weather changes seasonally: Rainy seasons are followed by heat seasons. The change in season from rain to heat is a time of friction, excitement and danger (season of friction), as the changing weather conditions lead to rolling thunderstorms that spark the prairie fires that roil the heat season. The change from heat to rainy season is a time of renewal and rebirth (season of rebirth).
Fauna: The prairie is home to migrating herds of gigantic elephants, each the size of moving castle. They have a keen sense of smell and can track water, roving from one watering hole to the next. The herds are composed of females and the young, led by female matriarchs. Male elephants leave the herd at reaching adulthood and roam the prairie alone, or in small packs led by an alpha.
Herd migrations: The herds move very slowly (or not at all) during the rainy season, due to the muddy terrain, and because water is everywhere. During the season of rebirth the elephant bulls seek out the female herds for mating. During the heat season everyone is on edge and constantly moving away from the prairie fires, in search of the few remaining safe watering holes. The season of friction is conflict-prone, with the elephant bulls being especially aggressive and the Arvaneen forming hunting parties and warbands to go after lone bulls or gaining an early advantage over competing centaur tribes.
