Core Rule Changes

Changes to Creature Types

Celestials and Fiends

The inhabitants of The Outer Planes are known collectively as Celestials. Celestials are divided into subtypes, with each Primal Plane having its own demiplane. For example, creatures from Soular or one of its demiplanes are known as Fiends and have the Fiend subtype. Within each subtype exist planar families specific to the plane, such as Devils from The Hells or Demons from The Abyss.

Class abilities have been edited to reflect this change. Other areas, such as spells, have not been edited due to sheer volume, but the general rule is that all celestials are included in abilities that specify celestials. If a spell or ability offers a choice between fiends and celestials (such as allowing you to prevent celestials or fiends from entering an area), you can pick a subtype of celestial, such as fiends, for the spell or ability to affect. If a spell or ability differentiates between fiends and celestials (such as informing you if a nearby creature is a celestial or fiend), you learn the creature's plane of origin if it is a celestial. Furthermore, if a spell or ability specifies only fiends, you can select a different celestial subtype to affect instead. Generally, this choice is made when the spell or ability is learned or prepared, and cannot be switched later.
