04 - Splinters in the Machine

Flint

Ven 53, 2424 - Chapter 2 - Session 4 - The Cost of Conflict/ Luck be a fickle Mistress

The days have grown colder as the new year rapidly approaches.
We awaken the next morning after scoping out the complex and decide to head in one more time to get any last intel that could be helpful to our mission. Z'ed headed off for the Grove Cradle again as the bulk of the group when to check out the Rail Spurs again. Bruin just said fuck all and headed off to the Overseer's Tower until Klackers talked him out of it. A giant bear would stand out like a sore thumb with all those scrying orbs on that tower. Instead Bruin made off for the Logging trenches.
Amani found some magical surveillance glyphs at the Rail Spur that we need to be aware of if we try to do anything there. Odra and Klackers found some ways we can help sabotage the Spur and disable the trains though. In a addition Klackers lucked out and found a schedule for the guards movement over the next couple days. I might have been distracted thinking about my interaction with Nellie the night before and wasn't much help.
Bruin found some ways we could sabotage the cutting machines at the trenches.
From there we all split up to get one last look see at the other areas. Z'ed and I almost got caught by some guards at the Emberkilns. Luckily we found out what we needed and booked it. As a group we all went MAXIMUM EFFORT and got every last detail we could about the complex.
We got done earlier then we thought and got back to camp with ample time to plan our espionage attack on the complex. We decided to sabotage as much as possible all at the same time to cause confusion and mayhem without them having time to respond with more force.
We lay out all the info we gathered and planned a synchronized sabotage attacks on multiple points of the complex.
We got an early start and made our way to the complex at first light.
I went to undermine the Rail Spur.
Amani and Klackers took on the Overseer's tower.
Odra and Bruin went to try and free the slaves at the Chain Pens.
Z'ed headed to the Refinery Heart.
Z'ed successfully sabotaged the arcane polarity of the main machinery and slipped out leaving its crew scrambling to figure out what was going on.
I was able to craft some false pins between the cars of the trains. As they started to move the pins broke and caused cars to crash into others smashing into other cars and machinery. I may have been spotted though. Oops!
Amani with the guiding light of The holy Kevin was able to target the detection crystal. She was successful and was even able to dispel its ability to ping her in doing so.
Klackers was able to blend in and sneak in and out without anyone batting an eye. He secured some documents that could prove useful.
Odra got to the slaves and just broke their chains which startled the lot of them. She was able to calm them down enough to lead them out of the cells towards freedom.
Bruin was spewing some religious nonsense to calm the group Odra was ushering out. He accidently set off a rune but was able to resist its effect and they made their way to us.
We met up and put the Hollowwood Yard behind us left in chaos and disarray.
We got the group of slaves safely back to camp and felt pride in our accomplishments. We unfortunately left some slaves behind and need to go back tomorrow to try and get them freed.
We headed back to press our luck again the next day. The place was still in a state of confusion but also more alert. We need to be extra careful this time around.
Klackers and I went back to hit the Refinery Heart again.
Amani and Bruin headed to the Logging Trenches.
Z'ed and Odra went off to the EmberKilns. I gave Z'ed a vial of something I thought might help her with her nerves.
Amani sabotaged some of the cutting machinery bringing them to an abrupt stop.
Bruin just straight up bent the iron and steel of the machines but was spotted by the yard foreman. He somehow someway talked his way out of it. Just the usual talking bear checking on some broken machines like every other day.
Klackers and I were able to mess up the refinery more but at what cost. I messed up the leyline equilibrium and the refinery heart exploded. I got a nice burn for my troubles and left with 1 less eyebrow.
Odra got things done at the Emberkilns and got out as Z'ed tried to disrupt the binding spells that held the fire elementals. The binding proved too strong and she was hit with a backlash of energy. She was able to get out though and live to fight another day.
So far we have been successful but these strikes against the complex's infrastructure are getting more challenging and risky. As we left the Hollowwood yard a booming voice called after us. "You think yourselves cleaver?" He gestured to the prisoners left behind and raised a glowing blade. "This is the cost of your deeds". He lowered his blade as arrows were released upon the prisoners. No screams, no cries, just a silence. He took their lives because of us. How can I bear the weight of that. I, in part, caused their deaths. Their blood is on my hands.
He will pay dearly for that. I promise those souls they will be avenged.
