Characters may spend downtime to learn new languages, tools, or proficiencies with time, gold, and access to training. Progress may be accelerated through roleplay, faction involvement, or instruction from other characters. Skill proficiencies are rare and require long-term investment and DM approval.
They can train in one of the following:
Language
Artisan tool proficiency
Gaming set
Instrument
Vehicle proficiency
Training Type | Downtime Required |
|---|---|
Language | 8 weeks |
Artisan tools | 6 weeks |
Instrument | 6 weeks |
Vehicles | 5 weeks |
Training costs are 25 gp per week. This covers tutors, materials, practice space, and living expenses.
One of the following must be true:
A Trainer is available (NPC or faction)
Another player character has proficiency and spends their downtime teaching them
The character has access to a relevant institution (guild, monastery, military unit, etc.)
If none of these apply, training time is doubled.
At the end of training week, make an ability check tied to the skill:
Language (Intelligence)
Tools (depends on tool)
Instruments (Charisma)
DC 10 = success
On failure, the character either loses that week of training or they need to pay an additional 25 gp for that week. On a critical failure, the week is lost.
On critical success, the training is reduced by one week.
A character can reduce training time if:
They have downtime advantages (e.g. crafting or expertise feats)
They roleplay meaningful practice during sessions
They invest double gold to reduce total training by 1 week per 4 weeks required
