Nissa grew up deep within the ancient woodlands of the Neverwinter Wood, in a hidden forest enclave of gnomes far from the roads and cities of the Sword Coast. Her clan lived quietly beneath the towering trees, rarely interacting with outsiders and carefully guarding the paths that led to their homes. To the clan, the outside world was dangerous, loud, and unnecessary. Few ever left the forest, and fewer still returned.
The forest was Nissa’s entire world. She learned to track animals through dense undergrowth, move silently between the roots of massive trees, and survive in the wild with little more than a bow and her instincts. Among her people, she quickly earned a reputation as an unusually talented hunter — small and cheerful, but fiercely determined once on a trail.
Everything changed when a traveling wizard named Clara stumbled upon the hidden enclave while researching old stories and relics connected to the region around Phandalin. Though cautious at first, the gnomes eventually allowed Clara to stay for several nights. Around the fire, she told stories of ancient ruins, forgotten magic, sprawling cities, dragons, treasure hunters, and adventures far beyond the borders of the Neverwinter Wood.
For most of the clan, the stories were amusing curiosities.
For Nissa, they were life-changing.
The idea that entire worlds existed beyond the forest filled her with restless curiosity. Soon, the familiar trees that once felt comforting began to feel confining. She wanted to see the ruins Clara spoke of, hunt creatures no one in her clan had ever seen, and discover what waited beyond the edge of the woods.
Eventually, Nissa made the unthinkable decision to leave her home and travel with Clara into the outside world.
Though energetic and warm-hearted, Nissa possesses the instincts of a true predator. Years spent surviving in the wilderness have made her observant, patient, and surprisingly dangerous when threatened. Civilization is still strange to her, but she greets every new experience with excitement and wonder.
To Nissa, every road is a trail waiting to be followed — and every adventure is proof that leaving home was the right choice.
