Erik grew up on a cattle farm near the small settlement of Red Larch, along the long trade roads between the great cities of the Sword Coast. Life was simple but demanding. From a young age, he learned the value of hard work, discipline, and reliability — traits his family depended on to survive the harsh seasons and dangers that sometimes threatened the frontier.

His father had once served with the Lords' Alliance, helping protect trade routes and settlements across the region. Though he eventually retired to farm life, he raised Erik with the same values of duty, loyalty, and service that had guided his own life.

When Erik came of age, he was conscripted into military service protecting the roads and settlements of the Sword Coast from bandits, raiders, and monsters. Though never particularly ambitious, Erik proved dependable and capable in battle. He followed orders well, respected authority, and understood that some people were better suited to leadership than he was. For years, his life had structure, purpose, and clear expectations.

Then his service ended.

For the first time in his life, Erik found himself without direction. Returning to farm life no longer felt right, but outside the military he wasn’t sure where he belonged or what he was supposed to become. Looking for work that at least resembled the life he understood, he answered a notice seeking guards for a supply caravan headed toward the frontier town of Phandalin.

To Erik, it was meant to be temporary work — something familiar while he figured out his future.

But deep down, part of him hopes the road ahead might finally lead to something more: purpose, belonging, and perhaps even a place where he can truly choose his own path for the first time.
