Once, Chilliam Coldbane was known across the land as a noble half-elf knight. Born to a human lord and an elven envoy, he was raised with every expectation of greatness. His human kin saw in him a future general, while the elves believed him destined for wisdom and diplomacy. Chilliam sought to honor both legacies by swearing an oath of protection, vowing to shield his people from harm and chaos. In his youth, he was often mocked for his name. “Chilliam,” the other squires would laugh, “a knight as cold as a winter’s day!” Yet Chilliam bore their jests with dignity, certain that his deeds would one day eclipse the humor. To those closest to him, he carried a quiet secret: a tiny pet rat named Sir Nibblesworth. Dressed in scraps of cloth sewn into noble garb, the rat was Chilliam’s most loyal companion. In lonely moments, he spoke to the creature as though it were his own child, a confidant who would never betray him.

When the undead plague swept across the realm, Chilliam faced horrors beyond imagining. Villages burned, corpses rose from the earth, and his armies faltered against endless waves of death. In desperation, he turned to the whispers of a forbidden relic the Crown of Eternal Winter. It promised him strength to save his people, to freeze the tide of death with his will alone. He donned the crown. He won the war. And he lost everything. Chilliam returned victorious, but at a terrible cost. His warmth, compassion, and very soul froze beneath layers of ice. The people he saved trembled at his presence, for his armies marched with skeletal feet. He ruled from a throne of silence, convinced that only through dominion could order survive. Yet his heart clung to a single memory. In the deepest halls of his fortress, Chilliam keeps a tiny skull suspended on a silver chain all that remains of Sir Nibblesworth. For years, Chilliam believed it the relic of a child taken too soon, the source of his grief and fall. Only later did he realize the truth: the “child” he mourned was but his pet rat. Still, the truth did not weaken his resolve. Chilliam, master of death and commander of the undead, has tried countless times to restore Sir Nibblesworth to life. He has raised armies, bound spirits, and torn open graves yet the spark of his beloved companion evades him. It is his greatest failure and his greatest obsession. One day, Chilliam swears, he will find the means to return Sir Nibblesworth to his side. Until then, he marches ever onward, declaring himself the Frostbound Sovereign. Let others laugh at the name “Chilliam.” His legions do not laugh. They obey.
