The Piet are a sapient species native to southern Occara, where they have long formed settled agricultural communities known as shires. They are a familiar presence across much of southern Occara and are also found in predominantly human settlements, where many Piet families have lived for generations. Their society is strongly centered on family, local custom, agriculture, food production, and the maintenance of stable, comfortable households.

Physically, Piet are short, fully furred, rabbit-like mammals with powerful hindquarters and a naturally quadrupedal gait. Adults commonly become extremely heavy with age, particularly in prosperous communities. Piet are generally sociable, docile, practical-minded, and resistant to unnecessary change. Although fully sapient, they tend to have greater difficulty with abstract reasoning than humans and place considerable importance on experience, repetition, apprenticeship, and inherited practice. In human society they are often employed as farmers, laborers, craftsmen, gardeners, shopkeepers, and food producers, but are also frequently patronized or marginalized because of widespread assumptions about their intelligence and temperament.
