Magic is a natural interaction between the material universe and the higher-dimensional physical reality in which it exists. The material universe occupies a brane; the surrounding higher-dimensional bulk is called the Void. All magic arises through interactions between them. Gods, spirits, mortal belief, and collective emotion do not create or govern this process.

All magical phenomena ultimately originate in the Void and are generally divided into two categories: Low Magic and High Magic.

The Void

The Void is the higher-dimensional bulk within which the material universe is embedded. The material universe is a three-spatial-dimensional brane whose history forms a four-dimensional spacetime, including time. A brane is an extended physical structure, not necessarily a two-dimensional sheet. Its inhabitants experience a complete universe with depth, volume, and ordinary astronomical distances. Outer space belongs to that universe; conventional travel between stars cannot carry a vessel off the brane.

The Void possesses physical structure, fields, and consistent dynamics. Its apparent disorder arises from complex higher-dimensional processes interacting with a lower-dimensional environment. An observer on the brane sees only the accessible consequences of those processes and cannot infer their complete geometry from ordinary measurements. Locality and causal relationships must be evaluated in the larger spacetime as well as on the brane; unfamiliar appearances do not establish that the Void is lawless or that every apparent impossibility can occur.

The Void possesses no mind, will, purpose, morality, or intention. There are no gods of the Void and no great intelligences governing its forces. It does not reward, punish, tempt, judge, bargain, or answer prayers. The phenomenon called Void Corruption is a physical and psychological consequence of exposure to Void energies, not an intentional or moral act by the Void.

The Veil

The confinement and coupling conditions between material spacetime and the Void are commonly called the Veil.

The Veil is the physical restriction that normally confines matter and its familiar interactions to the brane and limits exchange with the bulk. It is not a wall in ordinary space. A breach changes that coupling and permits anomalous energy and momentum exchange.

The Veil is not completely impermeable. Small amounts of Void potential cross naturally, producing Low Magic. Practitioners of High Magic deliberately create temporary breaches in the Veil.

Repeated or extreme magical activity can weaken the Veil in a particular location. Severe damage can produce an uncontrolled or persistent breach through which Void energies continue to enter the material world.

Such breaches are rare but potentially dangerous. Affected areas may develop abnormal temperature, light, sound, motion, matter, or other physical properties. Living organisms exposed to sustained Void energies may also suffer Void Corruption.

Low Magic

Low Magic is produced when Void potential enters the material universe without deliberate intervention by a practitioner.

Most such interactions either dissipate harmlessly or produce effects indistinguishable from ordinary natural processes. In some cases, however, exposure affects living organisms.

The most common persistent manifestations are known as Gifts and Burdens.

Void Corruption

Void Corruption is the alteration of a biological organism through exposure to Void energies.

The severity of corruption varies according to circumstances that are not fully understood. Limited exposure may produce a stable supernatural trait without otherwise harming the organism. Gifts and Burdens are both forms of this limited corruption.

Greater exposure can result in progressive physical and psychological changes. Known effects include mutation, abnormal bodily functions, altered personality, impaired judgment, paranoia, hallucinations, psychosis, and other disturbances of cognition or behavior.

At extreme levels, Void Corruption can alter an organism so extensively that it no longer resembles a normal member of its original species.

Persistent Veil breaches are particularly dangerous because they can expose entire areas and populations over extended periods.

Knowledge of Void Corruption is uncommon. In territories influenced by the Aurethian Celestiate, the Silent Ministry actively suppresses information concerning the phenomenon and conceals serious incidents from the general public.

Gifts

A Gift is a single beneficial supernatural trait produced by a limited and stable form of Void Corruption. Susceptibility varies among living beings. The Void-numb Mahruni cannot develop Gifts or Burdens.

Gifts are not learned and do not provide general control over magic. Each Gifted individual possesses a single specific Gift.

Some Gifts are obviously supernatural, such as speaking with animals, moving small objects without touching them, or perceiving the surface thoughts of another person.

Others closely resemble exceptional mundane ability. A person may possess an unusual aptitude for navigation, languages, mathematics, music, craftsmanship, marksmanship, animal handling, or another activity without realizing that the ability is supernatural.

A Gift is always beneficial to its bearer. Social or religious consequences caused by discovery do not change its classification.

Possessing a Gift does not make someone a mage.

Only the Void-Touched can learn High Magic. Individuals born with a Gift or Burden and species with natural Void affinity, including the Net’hret and Erynari, possess that eligibility. Training develops it into magical practice.

Burdens

A Burden is a detrimental supernatural trait produced by limited Void Corruption.

Burdens range considerably in severity. Minor examples may consist of unusual birthmarks or persistent physical abnormalities. More severe Burdens can cause chronic pain, impairment, deformity, mutation, or effects upon nearby people.

Some Burdens produce external effects rather than directly harming the bearer. Recorded examples include causing headaches in nearby people, aggravating physical pain, or producing involuntary physiological reactions in others.

A Burden remains classified as such even if its bearer learns to tolerate or make use of it.

Neither Gifts nor Burdens represent rewards, punishments, blessings, or curses in any objective sense. They result from exposure to Void energies without any conscious intent behind the process.

High Magic

High Magic uses learned techniques to control the exchange of energy and momentum between material reality and the Void.

A practitioner creates a controlled breach in the Veil, allows Void potential to enter the material world, shapes that potential into a desired physical effect, and then closes the breach.

The practitioner does not normally provide the energy required for the effect from their own body. Instead, they regulate and direct energy entering from the Void.

A working transfers energy, momentum and material order through its interaction with the bulk. The target is an open physical system during the exchange: heat, motion or newly ordered matter must be balanced across that larger interaction. The mage's body need not supply all energy or absorb every recoil, but available power, control and stability still impose limits.

High Magic can produce or manipulate heat, light, motion, electricity, matter, and other physical phenomena, including effects beyond the abilities of conventional technology.

In susceptible organisms, moderate prenatal Void exposure can produce sensitivity to the Void and the ability to interact with the Veil. Survivable major exposure later in life has a small chance of awakening it. A person can therefore be Void-Touched without an individual Gift or Burden. Mahruni remain entirely Void-numb through any amount or repetition of exposure; their resistance to harm is considerable but finite.

The Mahruni's Void-numbness prevents magical sensitivity while leaving them vulnerable to extreme exposure and to physical effects such as heat and force. Their tolerance of ordinary ionizing radiation is a separate biological adaptation.

Terms such as mage, wizard, witch, sorcerer, and warlock do not describe fundamentally different types of magic. They are cultural, historical, professional, or religious terms for practitioners using the same underlying process.

Resonances and Affinity

Resonances are emotional states that provide a reasonably reliable framework for humanoid interaction with Void Potential. Through them, practitioners learn to comprehend, focus, and harness pure chaotic potential that has no inherent divisions or categories. Each Resonance’s name and portfolio describe the practitioner’s approach to shaping a working.

The six Core Resonances are Fear (violet), Sadness (blue), Disgust (green), Enjoyment (amber), Anger (red), and Desire (pink). Casting through one requires genuinely feeling the associated emotion while focusing on the desired outcome. The Void itself is non-sapient, and belief or emotion cannot shape it into gods or entities.

The Core Resonances form three opposing pairs: Anger and Fear, Desire and Disgust, Enjoyment and Sadness. A trained mage can use the opposing emotion to interfere with a perceptible working before it manifests. Once an effect is complete, changing its consequences requires a new appropriate working.

Affinity measures the practitioner's ability to evoke and harness a Resonance. Minor workings yield sparks, glimmers and fleeting impressions. Greater mastery enables practical effects, miraculous healing and eventually enduring enchantments. The most accomplished workings can transform armies, settlements and vast landscapes. Lasting ordinary consequences can also follow small workings: tinder ignited by a spark may carry a fire far beyond its source.

Invocation and Control

A working requires the practitioner to establish the necessary emotional resonance, shape the incoming potential and bring the interaction to a safe conclusion. The target must lie within mechanically unaided line of sight. Familiar procedures, sufficient Affinity and the help of other trained practitioners improve the caster's command of the process.

Failure to establish resonance can make an attempted working fizzle harmlessly. Loss of control can instead release potential into the surroundings. A severe discharge is called an overload. Its reach and violence follow the power actually brought to the working, its intended nature and the immediate circumstances.

A focused working can remain localized even when its precision or permanence demands considerable mastery. Heat can ignite fuel, force can break a structure, and an unstable breach can leave a persistent disturbance. These consequences develop from the working and the material conditions around it.

Spells and Rituals

Practitioners establish a spell through three successful repetitions of the same defined result within a period short enough to consolidate the procedure. Those repetitions can follow one another in a single session. Once the method is established, later castings benefit from familiarity. A borrowed written spell must first be successfully performed before the caster gains that familiarity. Spellbooks preserve the effect, method and agreed limits; learned spells can be retained in memory without daily preparation.

A Ritual brings additional practitioners into a spell under a lead caster. Their participation strengthens the leader's available Affinity, while the leader supplies the directing will and familiarity with the procedure. Common spell families express a Resonance's basic capabilities at progressively greater scales. Produce Flame, for example, ranges from a tiny ignition source to an enduring conflagration.

The companion Magic rules describe casting pools, Risk, Affinity benchmarks, spell learning, Rituals and countercasting.

Engineering and Restoration

Among interstellar societies, Void Engineers unite advanced technical education with High Magic. They maintain the machinery and magical interface of Void Drives, whose mage circles sustain an engineered warp bubble while the ship remains in material spacetime. Net’hret factions, pirates and cultists are the communities that operate these drives.

An engineer who understands every component of a machine and all their interactions can restore it instantly through a successful working. Spare parts and surviving remnants are unnecessary when the practitioner has the required knowledge and magical capacity; even an entirely destroyed mechanism can in principle be reconstructed. Study and diagnosis may take much longer than the restoration itself.

Complexity, precision, damage, absent material and scale determine the demands of reconstruction. Complete knowledge makes the correct mechanism possible; the power actually available determines the restoration's potency. A restored machine works through its material construction unless its design itself requires an enduring enchantment. These applications belong to interstellar technical practice and are unfamiliar to ordinary people on Veyrath.

Risks of High Magic

High Magic joins material spacetime to the higher-dimensional bulk through a controlled interaction. Its danger lies in losing command of that process. Training and clear instructions improve a practitioner's prospects, while the power and circumstances of a working determine what a failure can release.

A failed working may result in uncontrolled heat, electrical discharge, violent changes in pressure or motion, damage to matter, mutation, Void Corruption, destruction of living tissue, abnormal physical effects, permanent damage to the Veil, formation of an uncontrolled breach, or the accidental passage of a Void entity into material reality.

Accurate instructions are therefore not sufficient to make magical practice safe. A person may understand how to attempt a working without possessing the experience necessary to control it.

Void Entities

The Void contains persistent structures commonly described as Void entities.

Void entities are not sapient. They have no moral intent, even when their interaction with material reality is destructive.

A Void entity may enter material reality when a breach in the Veil intersects with it.

Many cannot remain stable in the material universe and quickly dissipate. Others can persist by using matter or energy as a form of structural support. Living tissue, heat, electricity, minerals, magnetic fields, and nervous systems may all serve this purpose depending upon the entity involved.

Such entities can be highly dangerous without possessing hostility or moral intent.

Magic in the Arvessan Empire

High Magic was legal and openly practiced during most of the Arvessan Empire.

The Imperial College of Magic trained practitioners, conducted magical research, licensed the practice of High Magic, and supplied court-sanctioned wizards to the imperial government.

Magical practice remained regulated by the state rather than unrestricted.

The Aurethian Celestiate opposed the Imperial College throughout much of its existence. Celestiate doctrine held that High Magic allowed mortals to obtain power outside the proper divine order and encouraged people to place themselves above their intended position within creation.

Imperial authorities nevertheless continued to protect and regulate magical institutions while central government remained strong.

Suppression of Magic

During the final 100 Cycles (about 146.1 Veyrathian years) of the Arvessan Empire, imperial authority weakened while the Aurethian Celestiate assumed increasing responsibility for education, charity, administration, records, and other functions formerly supported by the state.

Following the collapse of the Empire in 1013 AB, the Celestiate moved openly against magical institutions.

The Imperial College of Magic and many associated schools, libraries, laboratories, and teaching houses were destroyed or seized. Practitioners, instructors, and apprentices were hunted, while magical texts were burned, confiscated, or placed in restricted church archives.

The initial campaign continued for more than 10 Cycles (about 14.6 Veyrathian years).

Celestiate preaching also associated magic with the economic and social disasters surrounding the imperial collapse, including inflation, food shortages, failing infrastructure, crime, and the disappearance of effective government.

The Silent Ministry

The Aurethian Celestiate continues to suppress High Magic through the Silent Ministry.

Its field priests, known as Examiners, investigate suspected practitioners, magical instruction, forbidden texts, unexplained supernatural events, and evidence of unauthorized activity involving the Veil.

The Silent Ministry is also responsible for responding to uncontrolled Veil breaches and serious cases of Void Corruption. Its duties include containing affected areas, eliminating or securing dangerous organisms, recovering contaminated materials, and preventing information about such incidents from spreading.

Evidence is commonly confiscated or destroyed, witnesses may be controlled, and incidents are concealed or attributed to non-magical causes where possible.

These policies have made public knowledge of Void Corruption extremely limited.

Magic in the Modern Era

By 1287 AB, open magical practice has largely disappeared from territories under Celestiate influence.

Surviving practitioners generally rely on private instruction, concealed manuscripts, isolated teachers, family traditions, or small clandestine networks. Permanent magical schools are particularly vulnerable to discovery.

The Celestiate also controls much of formal education throughout its jurisdiction. Practical instruction in High Magic is prohibited, and surviving technical material is tightly restricted.

As a result, most ordinary people in Aurethian societies do not believe that functional High Magic still exists. Magic is generally associated with old imperial history, folklore, superstition, fraud, or misunderstood natural phenomena.

Obvious Gifts and Burdens remain socially and religiously suspect, but their actual relationship to Void Corruption is not widely understood.
