Void Engineers

A Void Engineer combines trained High Magic with exacting knowledge of machinery. Such specialists manage the technical and magical workings of Void Drives and can restore familiar equipment with extraordinary speed. Their value is greatest where a failed reactor, shattered assembly or missing component would otherwise leave a ship dependent on distant workshops and supply routes.

A Demanding Education

Qualification ordinarily requires nearly ten Cycles of higher education in engineering and the physical sciences, alongside advanced magical training. Mechanics, materials, thermodynamics, electrical systems, computation, control theory and practical work on real equipment all contribute to the profession.

The engineer must understand every component of the machine being restored, what it does and how it interacts with the rest. Familiarity with a device's purpose or an unread schematic cannot supply that understanding. An unfamiliar revision or undocumented alteration can put even an apparently familiar mechanism beyond the engineer's immediate competence.

Expertise has boundaries. A specialist may know a particular propulsion assembly exhaustively while needing extensive study before attempting another manufacturer's reactor or an alien control system. Repairing an individual assembly requires equal understanding of the interfaces that let it function within the larger machine.

Magic and Machinery

Void Engineers must be Void-Touched and trained in High Magic. Natural affinity provides eligibility; education and practice develop the ability to use it. The Net'hret's innate gravity control supplies neither technical qualifications nor mastery of the Resonances.

A Void Drive uses an engineered apparatus and a circle of trained mages to sustain the negative-energy configuration of a warp bubble. The ship remains within material spacetime as space contracts ahead and expands behind. Engineers maintain the machinery, establish operating conditions and regulate its interaction with the mage circle. Qualified engineers may join that circle, whose sustained participation remains necessary.

Void Drives are operated by Net'hret factions, pirates and cultists. These communities provide the practical origins of drive training and experience. An engineer's later loyalties or employment may change, and their abilities remain useful aboard ships with conventional propulsion.

Restoration and Reconstruction

Once a restoration working succeeds, the physical repair is instantaneous. Diagnosis, study and preparation can take considerably longer. Replacement stock, spare parts and surviving pieces are unnecessary when the engineer possesses sufficient understanding and magical capacity. In principle, even a wholly destroyed machine can be reconstructed.

The result is functioning material machinery. A restored mechanism continues to operate through its own construction unless its design already includes an enduring enchantment. Magical power cannot compensate for ignorance of how its parts must fit and work together.

A fractured familiar component is a far smaller undertaking than an entire engine or a sophisticated missing control assembly. Size, complexity, precision, damage and absent material increase the demands upon the practitioner. Complete reconstruction can exceed the capacity of even an accomplished engineer.

Limits and Hazards

Matter, energy, momentum and order must be accounted for across the interaction with the Void. The engineer regulates that exchange through the Veil. Control can fail, endangering the machine, nearby structures, crew and the local boundary with the bulk.

Technical mastery makes a correctly directed restoration possible. Magical proficiency and present conditions determine how much power the engineer can safely bring to it. A ship may carry a person who knows its machinery perfectly and still face damage beyond that person's immediate ability to restore.
