Although Wererats themselves are not evil, they often follow who they deem to be the strongest among themselves. The Wererats that followed the Rat Queen were once humans, who at one point were infected by lycanthropy when they were bitten by an infected rat. Slowly, they lost their grasp on reality and became more rat than human, gaining a complete resistance to diseases in all forms. However, much of their intelligence was lost, now living in a mad state where they only desired “cheeses” and “shinies”. They attached themselves to the Rat Queen, a powerful foe in the underdark. Although common weapons still harm the Wererats and they fall with the same amount of strikes as a fully armored warrior, their ability to quickly and easily infect their foes with lycanthropy means there will always be more wererats soon after an encounter.
