Boons

Minor Boon

Brighan blesses you with the resilience of the earth. Once you can recover from the wounded condition as if you had received magical healing, reducing your wounded condition by 1.

Moderate Boon

The earth itself rises to protect you. You gain resistance 5 to physical damage from attacks while standing on natural ground. This increases to resistance 10 against non-magical attacks.

Major Boon

Brighan’s power flows through you, allowing you to call upon the fertility of the land. Once per month, you can cast Plant Growth as an innate divine spell (8th level) without expending a spell slot, enriching the land in a 1-mile radius for the next year.

Curses

Minor Curse

Brighan withholds her nurturing presence. Food you attempt to eat provides no nourishment, forcing you to subsist only on magical sustenance.

Moderate Curse

The earth grows hostile to your touch. When you are on natural terrain, you take 1d6 damage every hour you remain there, as the ground itself repels you. This damage cannot be healed by natural means while you remain in contact with the earth.

Major Curse

Brighan’s wrath turns the land against you completely. Wherever you go, crops wither, and animals flee. You gain the Repulsive trait, and plants within a 30-foot radius of you immediately begin to decay. Additionally, you cannot gain sustenance from natural sources, and your presence causes natural terrain within a 1-mile radius to become barren.

Description

Brighan, the Earth Mother, is a central deity in Eirendor’s pantheon, embodying the essence of the land and its natural cycles. She is revered as a goddess of fertility, harvest, and protection, and her influence is felt in every aspect of life in Eirendor.

Aspects

  • Fertility and Harvest: Brighan is most commonly associated with fertility, both of the land and its people. She is the bringer of bountiful harvests, ensuring that the soil remains rich and crops flourish. Her blessings are sought during planting seasons, and festivals are held in her honor to celebrate the harvest.

  • Protection: As a mother figure, Brighan is also seen as a protector of her people. She shields Eirendor from external threats, both physical and spiritual. It is believed that she watches over the land, ensuring that it remains safe and prosperous.

Depictions and Worship

  • Depiction: Brighan is typically depicted as a tall, robust woman with long, flowing hair made of golden wheat or lush greenery. Her skin is often shown as a rich, earthen brown, with eyes that shimmer like the moon. She is dressed in robes of green and brown, adorned with flowers and vines, embodying the life-giving force of nature.

Worship Practices

Worship

  • Temples and Sacred Sites: Brighan’s temples are often found in groves, fields, or near bodies of water, integrating seamlessly with the natural environment. These sacred sites are places of pilgrimage, especially during the harvest season. Offerings of food, flowers, and crafted goods are left at her altars to gain her favor.

  • Festivals: Major festivals dedicated to Brighan include the Feast of the Harvest Moon, where communities gather to share food and give thanks for the year’s abundance, and the Spring Awakening, which marks the beginning of the planting season and is celebrated with songs, dances, and rituals to ensure a fertile year.

Roles and Influence

  • Patron of Farmers and Families: Brighan is the patron goddess of farmers, midwives, and families. Farmers pray to her for good weather and fruitful crops, while families seek her blessings for healthy children and harmonious households.

  • Guardian of the Land: In times of trouble, especially when the land is threatened by war or natural disasters, Brighan’s priests and druids lead rituals to invoke her protection. It is believed that she can stir the very earth to defend her people, causing the land to rise up against invaders or to heal itself after destruction.

History & Lore

The Birth of Eirendor: One of the most well-known myths is that Brighan shaped the land of Eirendor with her own hands, creating its hills, valleys, and rivers. She breathed life into the soil, and from her breath, all living things sprang forth.

The Eternal Oak: Another legend tells of the Eternal Oak, a massive tree said to be planted by Brighan herself. It is believed to be the source of all life in Eirendor, and its roots spread throughout the land, connecting everything to the goddess. The tree is said to be indestructible, and it is rumored that Brighan’s spirit resides within it.

The Tale of Brighan’s Daughter: In a popular story, Brighan’s daughter, a goddess of spring named Nuala, was captured by a winter spirit. Brighan, in her grief, caused the land to become barren. After a long search, Nuala was freed, and the cycle of seasons was restored. This tale is used to explain the changing seasons and the importance of balance in nature.
