Embody the story

Clerics of Fable desire to become one with the stories told, either attempting to become a new one or to embody one of them. Devout clerics with large collections of markings and tattoos telling their stories are not unusual.

The Dancing Foxes

Bang, the front door opens and shuts as heavy footsteps enter the kitchen. Shouting can be heard before the footsteps make their way to the little girl’s room. “we’re going out, don’t you dare touch the door before were back”. The little girl shivers a bit and nods. The shouting continues as the man goes back downstairs, until the sounds subside, leaving the house entirely silent. The silence is loud, almost deafening the little girl, before the slow start of a tune cuts through the silence. Were her parents back so soon? The little girl softly climbs out of her bed and sneaks downstairs. She takes a quick look around the corner, catching the glimpse of a group of colorful foxes dancing on the table and rummaging through cabinets. Before she even registers it, the foxes stop in their tracks, looking curiously at the girl. “Oh, sorry, we thought this house was empty….” One of them says, before waving the other foxes to quickly put the food back into the cabinet. “Are you all alone?” The girl nods, still awe struck by the scene before her. “Oh good! Well then you should join us, we’re looking for a spot to party at!” The foxes get ready to move out of the house, but the girl shakes her head, still stuck in place. “What? You’re not coming?” The fox looks at her confused. Once more the girl shakes her head, as she longingly looks at the door. The fox follows her gaze, trying to understand her reluctance. “Well… we don’t need to use that door” as the fox runs to a cabinet, pulling it open and jumping in. The other foxes follow and silence returns.

Slowly the girl regains her senses as she walks over to the cabinet, light emanating from it. She crawls to the small door, entering a world that looks like it’s been made with a painters brush. The foxes smile at her, get back on their hind legs, and start the party back up again. They teach her their dance, before being rudely interrupted and heading back through the cabinet door. Another fox pulls open a drawer and jumps in, opening the girl up to a world of infinite blue. The foxes sing as they fall through the endless sky, before another shining gate opens and shoots them out of a different drawer. And so it continues, another door, another world, another work of art. Until the heavy footsteps return, approaching the door. The little girl deflates and looks at the foxes, who jump into a cabinet without her. Hurriedly she runs upstairs, opening her closet. A world opens before her once more as she finds a bunch of sheets that are tied together. Without a second thought the girl ties them to her bed, throwing the rest out of her window. The heavy footsteps can be heard coming to her room, or at least they could, but not by the girl, as she is outside, dancing with the foxes.
