Whatever their purpose was, the Ancientforged are mechanical humanoids hailing from the (distant) past. Coming in all shapes, sizes and materials (most commonly metal), these living constructs show a glimpse of the ancient eras gone by. All of the Forged are intelligent (the actual level of intelligence depends on the unit) and most are sentient.
While some Forged still follow their prime coded directives, others are free to do as any other living creature would. How they gained their sentience and their free will is as much a mystery as the ones that built them and can be a unique reason for each Ancientforged.
*In our setting this player ancestry is not referred to as Warforged. Very few offense based Forged survived their intended purpose. Of the Forged that do ‘come on line’ they typically had a research/trade/domestic/defense purpose when they were created. Being sentient and having their own sparks of life Forged can choose to change their destiny.
An elite group of numenera experts (such as they can be) have been diligently researching Forged for five centuries in a well secured facility in the core of Corao City. Even still the methods and magic behind giving a construct true life, sapience, and sentience has not been fully revealed. How does one ‘create’ a soul?
Depending on which world the Ancientforged was built in, the appearance of the Forged differs, though their prime function is often visible in their design. Though not all Ancientforged follow the design choices commonly found in their era of origin, different looks are particularly rare.
7th world Ancientforged are bulky. They were forged with a purpose and goal clear in mind, not to be pretty. Nuts, bolts, metal plating and wires are often clearly visible, if not rusted by their age.
Art deco elements, like geometrical decorations, rich, warm colors and the usage of different materials aside of metal are characteristic of 8th world Ancientforged.
It is theorized that in the 9th world the Forged weren’t made until the ancients technology reached an advanced level. This is surmised because of the sleek and clean design of these Ancientforged.
It is unclear what 5th and earlier Ancientforged look like, as there have not been any encounters with these.
No matter the era a Forged is easily identifiable for what it is, a constructed being with a spark of life & soul.
Ancientforged names differ as widely as their shapes, sizes and functions.
Common are former designations, related to their function, builder, or simply a serial number. Names such as “Unit 1673-BRAVO”, “Logger”, “K&H M. III”
It is more common, however, that these names have been rewritten by a chosen name, one that is more pronounceable. These names can be anything, and are often similar to the names of the people around them. Ancientforged in dwarven societies might take a clan name, Forged in gnome society take a half dozen gnomish names, and so on.
When choosing your Ancientforged's name, keep in mind some players will use discord on mobile. Choosing a mobile friendly name is therefore greatly appreciated.
