General Information

Shenyun is an ancient empire of misty mountains, sacred forests, and elegant coastal cities situated in the eastern reaches of Orethar. Known for its refined artistic traditions, spiritual depth, and mastery of both martial and magical arts, Shenyun represents a civilization built on harmony between the natural and spiritual worlds. Governed by the Emperor or Empress—seen as a divine figure who maintains cosmic balance—and administered by powerful daimyo who rule the empire's provinces, Shenyun maintains a delicate equilibrium between centralized imperial authority and regional autonomy. The spiritual capital of Hebi No Miyako houses the grand temple to Midorihama, the revered Naga goddess of family, fertility, snakes, and sorcery.

Current Affairs

Political Climate

The current Emperor/Empress maintains divine authority as the living embodiment of cosmic balance, though the empire’s complex network of daimyo creates competing interests and subtle power struggles. The daimyo of major provinces—particularly those controlling Hú Guó and the metalworking centers of Tetsuyama and Ryuzaki-Mura—have grown increasingly independent. The imperial court in [[Hebi No Miyako]] remains a place of intricate political maneuvering through strategic marriages, poetry, and diplomatic tea ceremonies. The priesthood of Midorihama wields significant spiritual and political influence. Recent disturbing omens—rivers flowing backwards, ancestral spirits appearing in daylight, sacred snakes abandoning temple grounds—have created spiritual unease.

Economic Status:

Shenyun thrives on rice cultivation, coastal fishing and maritime trade, and renowned craftsmanship. Hú Guó serves as a major trade hub for silk, porcelain, tea, and weapons. Tetsuyama and Ryuzaki-Mura produce legendary quality weapons combining smithing with magical enchantments. Prosperity concentrates in urban and coastal regions while mountain villages struggle. Abyssal Blooms near sacred sites have disrupted pilgrimage routes. Strange blights have affected rice harvests.

Social Issues:

Shenyun maintains a strict hierarchical structure: Emperor/Empress, daimyo, samurai, priests and mages, artisans and merchants, farmers, and lowest ranks. Honor, duty, and proper conduct define one’s place. Growing tensions emerge as younger warriors question tradition. Women can become mages, priestesses, and rarely samurai, but face restrictions in secular leadership. Ancestor worship has been troubled as some spirits refuse to rest peacefully. Foreign traders are introducing new philosophies that challenge established ways.

Alliances & Threats:

  • Imperion — Limited trade, mutual benefit through goods and scholarly works.

  • Anahidora — Cordial through merchant connections.

  • Eirendor & Amenoria — Contact primarily through neutral trading posts.

  • Coastal Pirates — Require constant naval vigilance.

  • Abyssal Blooms — Manifesting in sacred groves and temples, spawning twisted yokai. Some appearing within or beneath major temples.

  • Xyroth Cult — Among disaffected ronin, failed scholars, and overtaxed peasants. Preaching chaos over cosmic balance. Conducting attacks on temples and imperial officials.
