Heinrix stood unmoving as the Commissar approached, a gust of stale amasec heralding his arrival. He registered the details with the cool, detached precision of a seasoned investigator: the slightly-too-quick stride that was meant to project authority, the forced set of the jaw, the faint sheen of sweat on the man’s brow. But beneath the signs of drink and strain, Heinrix also saw the unyielding steel of a man who held a failing line against impossible odds. He is a bulwark, Heinrix thought, but one that is cracking under pressure.

The Commissar’s augmetic eye whirred as it focused, the red targeting rune within reflecting the sickly blue glow of the Mould-fields visible through a nearby viewport. The air was thick with the cloying, sweet scent of those same spores, a constant, cloying perfume of failure. Heinrix allowed his own gaze—one of a becalmed, lightless sea—to sweep over Montauk in a single, analytical pass. He noted the severe lines of the Commissar's greatcoat, a garment of pure, brutal function.

“You surprise me with your visit, Inquisitor,”

Montauk said, a small, forced smile on his stubbled face. He held out a gloved hand in welcome, a gesture of protocol that was also a test of dominance.

Heinrix did not take the hand. He simply let it hang in the space between them, an irrelevant and slightly pathetic offering. The brass Rosette pinned to the high, purple-lined collar of his own charcoal greatcoat seemed to glint with a cold light of its own.

"My arrival is a matter of Imperial necessity, Commissar Montauk, not social courtesy," Heinrix said, his voice a deep hum, almost hypnotic in its clarity, delivered with a deceptive lightness that suggested the entire conversation was a trivial inconvenience to him. "Pleasure is a variable I have little time to compute."

He tilted his head fractionally, a gesture of almost academic curiosity, his mismatched eyes holding Montauk's gaze without a flicker of empathy.

"You smell of drink," he stated, not as an accusation, but as a simple, observable fact; The statement punctuated by a faint, airy intake of breath. "And your garrison is failing. The reports I have reviewed suggest a catastrophic loss of morale and a fundamental misunderstanding of the indigenous threat."

He paused, letting the weight of his assessment settle in the humid air.

"My work here is to rectify the latter. Your handling of the former is... also under review." He gave a slight, almost imperceptible nod, a dismissal that was more profound than any insult. "My Lord Inquisitor requires a complete understanding of the failure of the Adamantine Wardens. To that end, I will need your full, unvarnished report on your own garrison's operational deficiencies. It will serve as my starting point. You may omit the pleasantries. I trust it will be... thorough"

The Novacula Mortis was a considerably larger ship than Heinrix anticipated it to be. Navigating its corridors took… adjustment. It was a difficult surreality to wrap ones mind around after so long feeling trapped elsewhere.

His previous arrangements still weighed heavy on his mind.

Purposeful strolling through the Novacula never lessened its cavernous design to his perception and as he descended into just one of its fourty megatonnes it felt truly like lowering into another world.

He encountered less and less souls in the underworld of von Aurastor’s domain, where Marazhai had been mercifully granted his allowances.

Heinrix was stunned by the exchange when he’d witnessed it. He, having expected the Rogue Trader to deny the Drukhari out of hand instead barely required deliberation. Quickly acquiescing to the heinous petition with a dark amusement the Inquisitor was sure could mean nothing short of ruin in the long term.

He considered how he might… offer his services foremost in turn. That Lord von Aurastor might make use of him. His skills. Without appearing too… Eager. In light of Marazhai’s request.

A consideration that dissipated like smoke when he saw what the Lord Captain asked. Somewhat benign, he realized, yet altogether beyond his ken in the moment.

Beg for it. Came the smooth command.

Marazhai, ever in earnest, wasted no time- and did beg. And what a display.

Heinrix could flush at the words exchanged and recalls the way he looked away in a hurry when Lord Aurastor glanced his way with amusement writ plain. Looking so… expectant of him.

Did he know?

Heinrix felt the warp’s pressure upon his nape. At his collum. Needling his cortex. He wonders how it felt for Marazhai.

In the dim light, he was able to forget himself. The flickering lumens created pools of light ahead and with each he passed under he felt something more melt away. Something he allowed to slough off.

Tacky and tasting of iron.

Smelling of…

Fear.

A terrified whimper turns toward him. A wretched figure surprised to see such a dignified lord of the world above. A final reaper that surprised even himself with the ferocity with which he reaches to claw around the neck, barely guarded.

Heinrix exhales, needing only imagine the fire he set to vein before the inhuman terror split his ears and he, with a tremor, watches from behind his eyes as the pain inspired the most elaborate display of suffering he could have asked for.

He stumbled back in a smooth motion to catch himself on a rail. The Novacula’s blackest guts below even further.

He was in hell. And looks around in realization that he had shattered the lumen-strip above with his excitement.

Sounds of warp-madness caught his ill-fated attention further along the walkway. Steam sputtered in effort from under the grilles that checkered the corridor but he could see.

Prey.

His hands tremble as they release his grip as he pushes himself away from the edge. And approaches the waiting herd.
