early draft character exploration

"A bold play, Captain. But your patron's pockets, it seems, are not as deep as his ambitions."

Somerset turned. The man from the shadows stood before him, his presence a sudden, focused weight in the crowded room. Up close, the details were sharper, more dangerous. The subtle, golden fleck in the grey ice of his eyes, a secret one could only learn by being far too close. The faint, silvery scar that traced the hard line of his jaw. The quiet, absolute confidence of a man who was completely, terrifyingly at home in the dark.

"You have me at a disadvantage," Somerset said, his voice a smooth, charming counterpoint to the other man's rough-edged tone.

"I doubt that very much," the man replied, a ghost of a cynical smile touching his lips. "Post-Captain Henry Somerset of the Arunean frigate Siren's Reply. A commoner with a king's reputation. A man who, according to the official logs, recently had the great misfortune of discovering the derelict Stadholder, its hold breached, its valuable cargo lost to the deep." He took a slow, deliberate step closer, the space between them becoming a charged, dangerous territory. "A tragedy of logistics, I'm sure."

Somerset's blood ran cold. The charm, the performance, the carefully constructed mask of the rakish captain—it all dissolved in the face of this man's quiet, absolute certainty. This was not a rival. This was a hunter.

"My name," the man said, his voice a low, intimate murmur that was a threat and a promise all at once, "is Daud. And the cargo you have so tragically 'lost'... is mine. I am here to collect it."
