Summary

The Cantons of Sonn Hamar formed in an unlikely way -- they were settled centuries ago by explorers from the vast caverns beneath their dizzying heights. When a massive tiefling tribe from the south began to explore the range, they discovered not only a handful of dragonborn clans inhabiting the volcanoes in the region, but also a sizeable contingent of duergar inhabiting the spacious caves below.

The three groups, together, formed the Cantons, utilizing their various skills and resources to band together and form an enormous conglomerate. Massive underground rivers feed its major cities, with various families owning reservoirs, dams, and channels that supply Sonn Hamar and beyond.

More importantly, its deepest depths house massive deposits of gold, silver, iron, and adamantine -- the last in the Abyssal Caverns, said to extend to the very core of Cendrana. The Cantons boast the most talented miners and blacksmiths in all of Cendrana, and supply the rest of the Southlands with whatever metal and weapons they don't decide to keep for themselves.

Many have claimed that residents of the Cantons have secret, hidden tunnels leading to places all over the Southlands and beyond, and this was seemingly proven true a few centuries ago when they abruptly laid siege to the Peaks of Chaos and razed the coastal Jadeacre city of Goldcoast to the ground, claiming it as their own new city of Ebu Shepta.

Seeing an opportunity, House Castor sailed north at the same time and claimed New Anchor Isle for themselves. No retaliations for either attack have occurred yet, but tensions are high.
Still, it's hard to fight a war against the ones who make your swords...
