There are those in Marazhan who vanish not into exile, but into silence. Former Sentinels who refused unjust orders. Scholars who burned their titles rather than sell truth. Traders who broke contract to spare a life. When systems fail, some leave them behind. These are the Gilded Abandon.
Operating in secret through the depths of the Foundation and the shadows of the Veins, the Gilded Abandon are not a guild, a rebellion, or a church. They are a conscience unshackled—an idea carried by those who once served and could no longer abide the cost. Many of their members were once part of the Ledger, the Azure Sentinels, or the Keepers of the Deep. Now, they walk a harder road: protecting the innocent, guarding dangerous knowledge, and opposing those who profit from unchecked power.
They are said to follow the Pact of Twilight Mercy, a vow sworn not to obedience, but to action when justice falters.
Most people in Marazhan don’t know the Gilded Abandon exist. Those who do rarely agree on what they are. Saboteurs. Saviors. Vigilantes. Traitors. They are all of these, and none.
Oppose corruption, exploitation, and abuse by powerful institutions
Protect the vulnerable in Marazhan’s lower layers, especially those ignored by the law
Recover and safeguard dangerous relics or forgotten truths before they fall into the wrong hands
Offer sanctuary to those fleeing unjust judgment or institutional betrayal
Remain unbound by rigid systems or dogma—choosing mercy and action over obedience
The Gilded Abandon are not a faction that emerged overnight. They took shape slowly, like a scar. The first stories speak of a river caravan stopped by a lone figure in a broken Sentinel’s cloak, freeing the cargo of bound prisoners and vanishing before sunrise. Then came the evidence leaks, the collapsed trials, and the anonymous protections granted to the wrongfully accused.
They have no central founder—only a growing trail of coordinated acts too precise to be coincidence. Over time, those with nowhere else to go found each other in alley vaults, drowned chapels, and backroom libraries. They formed cells. Shared the Pact. And chose to become something new.
The Pact is Chosen: No one is forced to join. But once you take the Pact, your actions carry weight.
Oaths are Measured by Consequence: When an oath protects harm, it must be broken.
Mercy is Resistance: In a world built on cruelty, compassion is a weapon.
Knowledge is Not Ownership: Some truths must be guarded—not hidden, not hoarded, but protected.
Autonomy with Accountability: Each member acts alone or in small cells, but none are above reproach. When harm is done, it must be answered.
Aptitudes: Espionage, healing, sabotage, stealth, recovery of ancient lore, smuggling of people and ideas. Most members were once soldiers, scholars, clerics, or operatives of other factions.
Allegiance: Members reaffirm their vow to the Pact before any major action—often through spoken word, symbolic marking, or ritual offering.
Compensation: Aid in times of need, protection from persecution, access to forbidden knowledge, and community among those who chose compassion over compliance.
The Voiceless Chorus: A decentralized group of senior agents who interpret the Pact during times of ethical crisis. They communicate through magical ciphers and mirrored messages but hold no rank.
Shadowsworn: Trusted field agents and mentors, often responsible for guiding new members or leading missions.
Gilded Hands: Day-to-day operatives, defenders, spies, medics, archivists, and messengers who serve the people and the cause.
Kindled: New members undergoing their first acts of commitment. Many are still in hiding or seeking redemption.
Oathbreakers: Those who betray the Pact are not hunted. But their names are remembered, and their calls for help will go unanswered.
