Sanctum of the Last Vigil

🛡️ Sanctum of the Last Vigil

Near the southern edge of Timberfall Hollow, perched atop a modest but defensible rise known as Alric’s Vigil, stands a humble yet enduring structure: the Sanctum of the Last Vigil. Built of pale gray stone quarried from the Thornshadow foothills, the sanctum has weathered the storms of time, its presence a steady beacon against the shifting wilds of Wyrmhollow Wood.

The sanctum’s origins trace back nearly ninety years, when five survivors of a doomed expedition into Wyrmhollow returned from the cursed forest, bearing bloodied bodies and broken spirits. Of the thirty who entered, only those five escaped, and they credited their survival to the grace and strength of Lady Trislana, the Shieldbearer. Vowing to honor her and the promise they made to endure, they built the sanctum—not for glory, but as a living oath.

Over the decades, the Sanctum of the Last Vigil grew into a haven for guards, travelers, and those who live by oaths. Even today, villagers whisper of a soft golden glow sometimes seen behind the altar’s shield during the darkest nights—a sign, they say, that the Shieldbearer still watches over those who stand firm.

It was during the Battle of Hollowfield, nearly fifty years ago, that the Sanctum’s quiet strength was truly tested. Father Alric, then a young cleric of Trislana, rallied the townsfolk atop this very hill. Outnumbered and poorly armed, they fought through two nights and a day, defending the Sanctum and the village beyond. Their courage broke the raiders' will, and from that day forward, the hill came to be known as Alric’s Vigil—a testament not to overwhelming strength, but to unwavering resolve.
