Overview

Known as the Crater City, Larkon earns its name from the dramatic morphology of the land upon which it stands. Nestled near the slopes of the Crater, the city benefits from therapeutic natural properties and unusually rich, rare vegetation believed to be influenced by the Crater’s energies. Larkon is one of only two cities, aside from the capital, built in such close proximity to this perilous landmark.

Its houses are constructed of red stone reminiscent of the Crimson Wall, blending seamlessly into the rugged, mountainous terrain. Some dwellings cling to the edges of the canyon, while others spread across the higher mainland. Larkon is also famed for the exceptional longevity of its inhabitants, a trait widely attributed to the Crater and the Canyon’s lingering magic.

  • Population: Approximately 10,000

History

Larkon was originally constructed as a fortified keep, designed to contain the monstrous hordes emerging from the Crater. Additional keeps were later erected to support this defense. Beasts hatched deep underground and surfaced unpredictably, often catching the queen’s armies unprepared.

To counter this threat, the queen ordered the excavation of an extensive tunnel network connecting the forts and allowing soldiers to purge subterranean monster nests. Over time, this system expanded beneath the keep, eventually stretching all the way to the Crater itself.

Once the hordes were brought under control, a civilian settlement formed around the central keep. Through steady growth and continued fortification, this settlement evolved into the city now known as Larkon.

The Valley of Mana

On the slopes of the Crater lies the Valley of Mana, a region where powerful and rare herbs flourish. Their seeds sustained the mages and soldiers who helped Larkon grow and are widely rumored to contribute to the remarkable longevity of its people.

Defending the valley has always been difficult, as its magical flora attracts dangerous creatures. Though the valley lies beyond the city walls, druids and Rosian soldiers regularly oversee the careful harvesting of its herbs. Locals credit much of their health and prosperity to these plants, and the valley remains inseparable from Larkon’s history and identity.

Location

Larkon is built along the mist-shrouded slopes of the Crater, a region plagued by intense natural phenomena unique to the area. The surrounding land is largely dry, though pockets of fertile soil occasionally produce extraordinary vegetation, such as that found in the Valley of Mana.

Beneath the city lies a vast, hollow network of tunnels leading toward the Crater. These passages are heavily guarded, and access is strictly limited to druids and soldiers tasked with patrols and harvesting duties.

Theme

Larkon is a city shaped by survival and vigilance. Herbalists, druids, and arcanists thrive here, supported by a strong military presence and a disciplined militia. Constantly threatened by monsters emerging from the Crater, the city has grown resilient and wary.

Strategically positioned near the Freelands of the South, Larkon also lies along vital trade routes linking the two kingdoms, making it both a bastion and a crossroads.
