THE FRINGE

Dead Pocket Dimension within the Hive

Image

Core Concept

The Fringe is not large — it is compressed reality.
A wound in space stitched into the lower structure of The Hive.

It is:

  • Silent.

  • Color-drained.

  • Slightly vibrating at all times.

  • Structurally unstable.

  • Suspended over nothing.

The Jaraxi don’t rule it — they infest it.

MAP STRUCTURE OVERVIEW

The Fringe is shaped like a broken spiral descending toward a core rift.

Think:

  • Outer entry platforms (unstable)

  • Narrow vibration bridges

  • Suspended shard platforms

  • Central Void Sink (Jaraxi nest)

AREA DETAILS

A. Fractured Entry Platform

How they enter:

  • A Jaraxi portal ring activates.

  • A violent vibration ripples outward.

  • The air tears open vertically.

The platform floats over blackness.

Features

  • Cracked Amber floor fragments.

  • Gravity slightly skewed (balance checks harder).

  • Faint Hive architecture visible behind dimensional scar.

Encounter

  • 1–2 Bergas drift here.

  • They test, not attack immediately.

Purpose:
Introduce instability + vibration theme.

B. Crystal Echo Corridor

Long, narrow causeway lined with harvested portal crystals.

These crystals hum when stepped near.

Mechanics

  • Movement causes harmonic vibrations.

  • Jaraxi detect rhythm, not presence.

  • Stepping in irregular cadence grants stealth bonus.

This is where players learn:

Jaraxi don’t see. They feel.

C. Shard Market (Abandoned)

Remains of illegal trade.

  • Makeshift weapon stalls.

  • Broken Ironborn parts.

  • Crystal dust.

  • Dead Void Rings (inactive).

This is where:

  • They may find Nadril’s father’s tool.

  • Evidence of long-term Jaraxi presence.

Encounter possibility:

  • Rust Choir scavengers.

  • Fringe Herald observing silently.

D. Hanging Iron Cage

Suspended prison structure over abyss.

Contains:

  • Half-dismantled Ironborn.

  • Possibly Nadril’s father (alive but partially vibrationally altered).

  • Jaraxi experimentation site.

Visual

Chains descend into darkness.
No visible bottom.

Combat Twist

Cage begins oscillating if combat breaks out.

E. The Resonance Pit

Circular chamber.
Floor is thin membrane over Void.

Every sound here echoes infinitely.

Mechanics

  • Any loud action draws Jaraxi.

  • Unarmed combat safer than weapons.

  • Magic must be Sirashi-based or misfires.

This is where Tor’s training matters.

F. Core Rift — The Jaraxi Lair

A vertical tear in reality.

Jaraxi climb along invisible vibration lines.

Centerpiece:

  • A suspended Iron meteor shard.

  • Void Rings orbit it slowly.

  • The Rift pulses like a heartbeat.

Jaraxi open portals here.

ENVIRONMENTAL RULES OF THE FRINGE

1. Vibration Detection System

  • Slow breathing = stealth bonus.

  • Sprinting = automatic detection.

  • Combat escalates waves.

2. Iron Scarcity

If party brings iron:

  • Jaraxi become hyper-aggressive.

  • Iron destabilizes local reality.

3. Magic Restriction

Only Sirashi-style subtle casting works reliably.
Large spells cause dimensional tears.

SESSION FLOW OPTION

Phase 1: Infiltration

  • Stealth through Corridor.

  • Learn vibration pattern.

Phase 2: Discovery

  • Market clues.

  • Father evidence.

  • Moral choice: rescue prisoners or push deeper.

Phase 3: Vertical Danger

  • Hanging Cage battle.

  • Risk of falling.

Phase 4: Core Confrontation

  • Fringe Herald.

  • Jaraxi Alpha.

  • Rift instability event.

Escape Twist
Destroying Rift collapses spiral platforms.

ATMOSPHERE NOTES

Sound design:

  • Low hum.

  • Distant scraping.

  • Tail vibration pulses.

Color palette:

  • Pale violet.

  • Dust grey.

  • Amber cracks.

  • Iron rust red.

Smell:

  • Ozone.

  • Cold stone.

  • Metal filings.

OPTIONAL: JARAXI NEST MECHANIC

The deeper they go, the more rhythm syncs.

If they remain too long:
They begin to feel their own heartbeat echo back wrong

A broken tower going down into darkness.

From top to bottom:

  1. Entry Platform – floating broken floor where they arrive.

  2. Narrow Crystal Bridge – long thin path; Jaraxi detect vibrations here.

  3. Abandoned Market Platform – wider area with loot and clues.

  4. Hanging Iron Cage – prison suspended over abyss.

  5. Resonance Pit – thin floor that cracks if combat is loud.

  6. Core Rift – bottom tear in reality where Jaraxi nest.

Everything is:

  • Floating.

  • Unstable.

  • Over an endless drop.

  • Vertical.

Climb down broken platforms toward a glowing wound at the bottom.

1. Gravity

  • Down still exists.

  • But near the Core, “down” pulls harder.

  • Sometimes you feel slightly lighter or heavier.

Tell them:

“You feel your stomach shift slightly, like an elevator starting.”

Mechanically:

  • Normal movement above.

  • Near Rift: harder to jump up, easier to fall.

  • Certain moments: brief weightlessness.

2. Falling

Falling is not instant death.

Explain it like this:

“You don’t fall straight down. You fall between things.”

They hit:

  • Chains

  • Platforms

  • Debris

  • Crystal outcroppings

The Fringe is layered.

3. Sound

This is the most important physics rule.

Sound travels too well.

Every step vibrates through structure.

Jaraxi feel rhythm, not sight.

So explain:

“The air hums. Every movement joins the hum.”

Mechanically:

  • Running = detection.

  • Smooth breathing + slow steps = stealth.

4. Objects in Air

Dust floats slightly longer.
Loose stones wobble before dropping.
Thrown objects curve slightly toward the Core.

Tell them:

“It feels like the world wants everything closer to the Rift.”

5. Iron

Iron feels heavy.

Not physically heavy — existentially heavy.

If they hold iron:

“The air around it tightens.”

Jaraxi react faster.

6. Magic

Magic pushes reality.
Reality pushes back.

Big spells feel loud.
Subtle Sirashi magic feels like blending in.

Tell them:

“Power here is like shouting in a cathedral.”

7. The Deeper Rule

The deeper they go:

  • Movements feel slower.

  • Heartbeat feels louder.

  • Breathing feels noticeable.

Near the Core:

“You feel like something is syncing with you.”

The Simple Table Version

If you want ultra-clear rules for players:

  1. Move slowly = safe.

  2. Loud actions = enemies.

  3. Falling = dangerous but layered.

  4. Deeper = heavier gravity.

  5. Iron = attracts attention.

  6. Big magic = unstable.
