The Magocracy of Goliath

Image

The Magocracy of Goliath was founded in the aftermath of the Great War. Its primary purpose was to guard the Cell and the secret passages leading to the Underworld. A closed and heavily regulated kingdom, Goliath controls the only safe connection between the Mainland and the western continent now known as the Darklands.

Campaigning in Goliath

Goliath is a strictly regulated and closed state:

  • Entry requires formal permission from its ruling council.

  • Most travelers enter Goliath only to pass through it on their way to the Darklands.

  • Cities are built by Gargoyles, consisting of towering spires accessible mostly to flying creatures.

  • A limited number of ground-level shops cater to the few foreign visitors.

  • The region is surrounded by vast Amber Walls, remnants of the still-active Cell.

Campaigns in Goliath involve politics, forbidden knowledge, Underworld incursions, and navigating a society that is mistrustful but not hostile.

The People of Goliath

Goliath is inhabited primarily by Gargoyles, known as Golths:

  • A closed and exclusive society, cautious toward outsiders.

  • Highly educated, with a cultural devotion to knowledge, research, and preservation.

  • Protective of weaker species.

  • Gargoyles spend long periods in stone form, often meditating or resting.

  • Their architecture and way of life are built around magical study and airborne mobility.

Useful Lore

  • Goliath does not operate as a traditional kingdom; it avoids wars, alliances, and political entanglements.

  • The Golths remain neutral, intervening only when world balance is at stake.

  • The kingdom controls the passage between continents, supplying the Darklands with livestock and vital resources.

  • Goliath’s greatest purpose is to guard the Underportal Lakes, which connect to the Underworld.

The Dangers of Goliath

Though stable and well-defended, Goliath harbors significant threats:

  • The Underportal Lakes allow Underworld creatures to surface.

  • Occasional breaches release horrors into the countryside.

  • The western continent’s monsters may infiltrate the kingdom due to its proximity to the Darklands.

  • Internal dangers include forbidden knowledge, rogue wizards, and the Wraith Bandits, Gargoyle outlaws who traffic stolen magical documents.

Golth Customs

  • A Council of Archmages rules over Goliath.

  • Archmages are selected through closed magical elections.

  • Only wizards of sufficient power may be considered for the council.

  • Senior wizards may propose new candidates or demand magical trials.

  • Golths dedicate their lives to research, magic, and the preservation of lore.

  • They reside in tall, often inaccessible towers to protect their knowledge.

  • The bodies of the dead are turned into permanent stone statues, displayed throughout the state.

  • Goliath controls all Underportal access and regulates entry into the Darklands.

  • Wraith Bandits are infamous outlaws who steal restricted texts.
