The name Gyx refers to a presumed intelligence associated with enormous artifacts encountered within wormholes. The structures are observed; the identity and nature of their builders remain uncertain. Their scale and incomprehensible purpose have made the Gyx the leading candidate for the ICSS's theoretical Tier 5, Ascendant classification.
The artifacts provide the basis for the attribution. They offer no confirmed homeworld, anatomy, language or recognizable political history. Whether their presumed makers remain active, can be contacted or even belong to a single civilization is unknown.
Tier 5 describes the possibility of intelligence beyond ordinary biological existence and perhaps beyond conventional spacetime. Suggested forms include consciousness embodied in spacetime itself or migrated into higher dimensions. No confirmed encounter establishes that the Gyx occupy any such state or have overcome entropy.
The name is useful for discussing the unexplained works, but it carries a hypothesis. The artifacts' existence and the interpretation of their makers remain separate questions.
