Earth, also known as Terra, is a human-inhabited world in the Sol System, in the Orion Spur. It lies within the territory of Nebkhet, an independent Net'hret state, and is under strict ICSS protection through the Giza Conventions. Its human civilization is classified as Tier 1.

Earth's ancient contact with the Net'hret influenced human languages, religions and family lineages. Experiments at Giza demonstrated faster-than-light communication through the Void, but exposed the planet to risks that prompted ICSS intervention and the visitors' forced withdrawal. Earth is now observed by other civilizations under a non-interference regime.

History

Human settlement

Earth's human population descends from the ark-seeding program launched during the collapse of Neipas, humanity's original homeworld. A biological attack by Erynar devastated Neipas during an interstellar war, prompting the launch of ark-ships carrying refugees and colonial equipment. Earth was among the worlds settled through that dispersal. Other surviving colonies eventually rebuilt advanced interstellar societies.

Net'hret contact

The Net'hret's relationship with humanity predates Earth's settlement. During the ark dispersal, Net'hret actors saw opportunities to influence human development on new worlds. Their early Terran missions established relationships with particular communities, courts, temples and families. Selective assistance included water management, storage, surveying and the treatment of injuries. Earth received no industrial foundation capable of reproducing Net'hret spacecraft or communications equipment.

Long-lived visitors could maintain these relationships across many human generations. Egyptians worshipped some of them as gods, while encounters remembered in Hebrew and later Abrahamic traditions contributed to accounts of angels. Ancient Egyptian developed from Ra, the Net'hret's spoken language. The name Ra gave rise to the Egyptian r or ra, meaning 'mouth', 'utterance' or 'speech', and 'tongue' in the sense of a language. Egyptian hieroglyphs were a human invention; the visitors never taught humans their own written language. Human religious traditions continued to develop through local institutions, interpretation and myth-making.

The Giza experiments

Egyptian rulers, administrators, craftspeople and labourers constructed the pyramids at Giza with Net'hret technical assistance. The pyramids themselves were integrated stone-and-technology devices used to test experimental Void-based faster-than-light communication. Transmission succeeded, but the system's stability remained uncertain. The sponsors selected Earth because they were unwilling to expose their own homeworld to the same risks.

The experiments carried the hazards associated with Void Magic, including uncontrolled energy release, damage to living organisms and matter, Void Corruption, breaches in the Veil and the possible passage of non-sapient Void entities. The risk imposed on an inhabited human world prompted the ICSS to intervene and compel Net'hret withdrawal. The resulting Giza Conventions established protections for primitive and uncontacted populations.

The Nets removed all actual technology from the Giza devices shortly after the experiments. The surviving stone structures and a few artifacts rendered useless by age cannot reproduce their former communications function. The sponsors found no suitable replacement test site and never resumed the program; the achievement became lost technology through abandonment.

After the withdrawal

Many human–Net'hret offspring remained in the communities where they had been born and raised. Their descendants carried varying degrees of inherited strength, longevity and other Net-derived traits into later history, often without accurate knowledge of their ancestry. Memories of the visitors also survived in religious traditions and family histories. Earth's subsequent societies developed through the decisions and conflicts of their own inhabitants.

ICSS protection

Earth lies within Nebkhet territory and remains under strict ICSS protection. The Giza Conventions prohibit Nebkhet and other external powers from exploiting its population or resources or forcibly subordinating its societies. They also restrict direct contact that would alter native development. The ICSS's standing military provides the means to enforce these restrictions on interstellar actors.

During the original dispute, participating Nets argued that humanity's offworld ancestry weakened its claim to protection. The Conventions established that settled populations are protected regardless of whether their ancestors evolved locally or arrived from another world. Earth's origin as an ark colony therefore leaves its protections intact.

Earth's Tier 1 classification places it below the practical interstellar FTL threshold that subjects sovereign states to the ICSS's standards for spacefaring nations. Multiple civilizations, including advanced human societies, study Earth through covert observation. Such research is permitted only while the inhabitants remain unaware of the observers.
