Grayson the Cleric

By the Will of Altheda, no darkness shall enter here!

Biography

Grayson is a healer under the Goddess Altheda, the founder of light and protection magic from his home realm of Edilas. In his realm, those who manifest magical abilities during the teen years must enter one of the five Universities, revering the magics created by their founders. He became a “cleric”, a student of Altheda, and was instructed in the healing arts as well as militia combat and tactics. Though initially only training with a mace and shield, he has become proficient in the use of swords and bows since coming to Osterra.

Grayson was assigned to a team tasked with retrieving a stolen artifact, an Orb of unknown power. The team was led by renowned warrior and childhood friend, Clara. When they finally caught up with the thief, an unknown Conjurer, the culprit activated the Orb and summoned a Minotaur. The creature wiped out the entire party, knocking out Grayson in the process. When he came to, it took all of his strength to crawl to Clara, still alive but badly injured. Tired and out of mana (his magical energy), all Grayson could do was hold her in his arms as Clara’s life faded.

Fueled by rage, Grayson followed the trail the Minotaur had made, due to some heavily sustained injuries inflicted upon it. Grayson was able to defeat the beast in its weakened state. The Conjurer, now defenseless and out of mana himself due to using the Orb, fell quickly afterwards. He then fell to his knees and cried for his fallen comrades, feeling shame for not being able to help them. After many hours of resting where he fell, Grayson decided that he could not go back home, not after the shame he felt of failing in his duties. He picked up the stolen Orb, channeled his recovered mana into it and summoned a portal. He did not know where it led, but as he stepped through it his only thought was anywhere but here.

Shortly after coming through the portal he stumbled upon a madman named Geth Kelemvor, who seemed to have come through a portal himself. They traveled together for a while, fighting various orcs and monsters occasionally until running into a group led by Commander Chronos McKragg. Thanks to another adventurer in his travel group, Xoticus the Kind, Grayson and Geth learned of the ley lines and how to channel the magical energies of this new realm, known as Osterra. Grayson later reached out to the High Celestial Healer Meryn and asked for tutelage of the healing arts, and for assistance in accessing his previously lost connection to the Goddess Altheda.

Grayson has since become a founding member of Cedar Hill, a Sentinel, and one of the first members of the Order of Light. He offers training in the healing arts, as well as guidance for those who seek it.

Personality

Grayson is generally reserved in nature, preferring a quiet gathering of friends over a loud and rowdy tavern. He values the close friendships that he has made during his time in Osterra. But that does not mean he is dismissive of strangers, as he enjoys making new connections as well. Grayson enjoys talking to new adventurers, and helping with early class decisions.

As a healer, Grayson believes that everyone should have access to healthcare, offering healing services to any who ask. He often seeks to assist with rituals, especially those that deal with cleansing and the revitalization of barren areas like crop fields and forests. In battle he often positions himself towards the back of the group, only running forward when another needs to be healed. He can hold his own in a fight if he has to, however.

Since coming to Osterra Grayson has always worn the colors red and white as well as the crest of his former University, preferring them over the colors and heraldry of his faction which is represented by a belt flag. The Crest of Altheda, his symbol, represents the three main principles of his teachings: protection (shown as a kite shield in the center), health/rejuvenation (shown as a pair of phoenix wings on either side), and divinity/light (a halo connecting the top of the wings).
