The Myriad
The Myriad is a collection of loosely allied city-states, baronies, and dominions that arose from the ashes of the Ancient Korinthian Empire. Spanning the central forests, fertile river valleys, and rugged mountain ranges of Initia, the Myriad is a patchwork of cultures and peoples, each striving to preserve their autonomy while engaging in cutthroat diplomacy, trade, and the occasional skirmish. Though nominally united in their opposition to outside powers, the city-states of the Myriad are often at odds with one another, their ambitions and rivalries shaping the region's complex political landscape.
Ruler: Baron Daigo Natori
Overview: Nestled in the misty cedar forests, Verdantfall is a center of mysticism, natural beauty, and trade. Its monopoly on Verdantfall Essence, a rare alchemical reagent derived from mosses and fungi at Ishvalen Falls, gives it significant influence. Baron Daigo deftly navigates the Myriad’s politics, balancing his barony’s resources with its growing importance as a neutral ground for negotiations.
Relations: Verdantfall is courted by numerous city-states for its Essence but remains wary of their ambitions. It frequently hosts envoys from other powers in the Temple of Thalrond, a symbol of the barony’s commitment to balance and neutrality.
Rulers: The Kanetsu Syndicate, a shadowy coalition of halfling families led by Boss Haruto Kanetsu
Overview: The halflings of Kanetsu control the Bridge of Ten Thousand Arches, the only reliable crossing between the two halves of Initia. The bridge, an Ancient Korinthian marvel spanning miles across a treacherous gorge, serves as both a trade route and a choke point. The Kanetsu Syndicate charges exorbitant tolls, ensuring their wealth and dominance. The halflings are known for their cunning, discipline, and strict adherence to a feudal code of honor—albeit one with opportunistic interpretations. Their enforcers, the Shadowed Sandals, are as skilled in espionage as they are in combat.
Relations: The Syndicate maintains a delicate balance between cooperation and intimidation, using their monopoly over the bridge to extract wealth and concessions from the other city-states. They are both feared and respected throughout the Myriad.
Ruler: Shogun Ryosuke Mori, a human warlord and master tactician
Overview: Kyonara is a militaristic city-state built atop an ancient fortress of the Korinthian Empire. It is known for its disciplined samurai, formidable navy, and innovations in enchanted steel. Kyonara seeks to expand its influence, claiming to restore the empire’s legacy while pursuing its own ambitions.
Relations: Kyonara often clashes with Verdantfall over its resources and has tense relations with Kanetsu, as the bridge tolls hinder its ambitions. However, the shogun’s reputation as a master diplomat has kept outright conflict at bay.
Ruler: The Council of Seven, composed of elven elders and human merchant princes
Overview: Aelrindel is a prosperous trade hub built aside the Silver Lake, with its wealth stemming from fine silks, rare spices, and expert crafts. It is the most cosmopolitan of the city-states, blending elven grace with human ingenuity. Their legacy is that of sea-dragon hunters that earned the freehold's current prosperity.
Relations: Aelrindel maintains a tense partnership with Kanetsu, as the Syndicate’s tolls cut into its trade profits. It often allies with Verdantfall to counterbalance Kyonara’s aggression.
Ruler: The Iron Vizier, a mysterious gnomish sorcerer
Overview: Hidden in the rugged mountains, Dhakara is a city of fire and metal, powered by geothermal forges. Its gnomish engineers produce powerful war machines, making it a vital but unpredictable force. Dhakara often sells its creations to the highest bidder, further destabilizing the region.
Relations: Dhakara is distrusted by most city-states due to its mercenary nature but is too valuable to ignore. It occasionally allies with Kyonara for protection and patronage.
Duchy of Green Water
Ruler: The Duke
Overview: Positioned on beautiful land along the east coast of Saltor's Grasp, this powerful house de Parigi has become known for their wisdom and intolerance for injustice. As such, they have the allegiance of many small villages west of the Atraxian mountains. Their chevaliers and steeds are second to none.
Relations: The Duchy is physically and politically isolated from her peers but retains excellent relations with the dwarves of the Bog. Dhakara is renowned for having said he finding the Duke's company "acceptable"--a rare and high praise for the mad gnome.
The Myriad’s city-states are deeply influenced by the remnants of the Korinthian Empire, blending elven artistry, human ambition, and halfling ingenuity. While trade and alliances are common, rivalries often erupt into border skirmishes or assassination plots. The Kanetsu halflings are a constant reminder of how a small but strategically placed power can dominate larger players.
The future of the Myriad is uncertain, with threats of outside invasion, ancient powers awakening, and city-states vying for dominance. Yet within this chaos lies a vibrant land of opportunity for those bold enough to navigate its treacherous currents.
