The Umbral Pact shelters mages whose methods are forbidden or whose sources of power cannot survive public scrutiny. Members study shadow magic, practice void magic, and enter bargains with demonic or other dangerous entities. Some arrive seeking a lost spell. Others come because an existing bargain has already made ordinary life impossible.

Their agreements bind them to different powers and demands. The guild provides knowledge about those obligations, but it also trades in them. A member's debt can become another member's opportunity.

Ilyra Venn controls access to the Closed School's archive. Senior signatories hold different agreements and teach within their own circles. Their authority depends partly on the power they can provide and partly on how much risk their obligations create for everyone else.

The Pact's recurring disputes concern payment. One signatory's bargain may demand a service that exposes another's sanctuary. Venn can settle an internal claim, but cannot promise that an outside patron will accept her ruling.

Practitioners — Full members pursuing their own studies or agreements.
Petitioners — Seek instruction or help with a dangerous obligation; some never become members.

Study — Recover lost spells and investigate shadow and void phenomena.
Bargaining — Arrange contact with dangerous entities and interpret existing agreements.
Concealment — Maintain refuges and records for practitioners excluded from lawful institutions.

Recover a missing volume containing the original terms of several inherited bargains.
Determine whether a recently contacted entity is using an old name to obtain obligations it is not owed.

The Pact accepts ambition, desperation, and curiosity as reasons to join. It distrusts people who claim that power has no cost. Members compare the terms of agreements as other scholars compare methods, though many conceal the condition that would make their own bargain unbearable.

Some members pursue power regardless of who pays for it. Others justify increasingly dangerous work as the only way to escape an earlier mistake. Both can use the guild's teaching and resources.

Bring magical knowledge, an agreement requiring interpretation, or a useful contribution to a teaching circle.
A senior signatory sponsors admission and records what the new member owes the guild. Joining does not automatically require a demonic pact.

Instruction in forbidden practices and access to records unavailable in recognized libraries.
Advice from people experienced with dangerous obligations.
Refuge and specialist help when an experiment or patron turns hostile, subject to the circle's terms.

Contribute research or agreed services to the sponsoring circle.
Disclose obligations that could endanger a shared refuge.
Do not pledge another member's service, name, or property without their agreement.

The Reading of Terms — A proposed bargain is read aloud to a small panel. Each reader states what they believe it promises and what remains ambiguous. The panel records disagreement rather than claiming certainty.
The Unpaid Account — Once a year, each circle reviews outstanding obligations. Missing members' agreements are retained until the others know whether their debts ended with them.

Ilyra Venn — A shadow theorist whose reputation rests on identifying hidden conditions in old agreements. She can explain what a bargain costs while still encouraging someone to accept it.

Nihilith cults — The Pact is rumored to have contacts among surviving cults. Neither the nature of those contacts nor their reach through the guild is established.
Arcanum Obscura — Trades rare texts with the Pact. Its scholars want the Pact's knowledge, but an agreement attached to a manuscript can make ownership disputed.
Ebon Inquisition — Pursues practitioners and their refuges. The Pact's own decisions give investigators genuine crimes to uncover.

The Closed School holds records of spells, obligations, and failed experiments. Its collection is valuable because it preserves mistakes as well as successes. Individual circles maintain smaller refuges and keep some agreements out of Venn's archive entirely.

History

The Pact grew from meetings between practitioners who needed to compare dangerous agreements without reporting themselves to magical authorities. Shared records became teaching circles. As those circles accumulated power, the guild changed from a place to seek help into a place to obtain the same bargains that had brought its founders there.
