The Crimson Cloak moves cargo that cannot travel openly: stolen artifacts, banned goods, and magical items their owners do not want inspected. It earns its fees by getting those goods past customs officers, city watches, and rivals who would rather seize the shipment themselves.

The Cloak's power lies in its routes. A cargo may pass through several carriers and warehouses before reaching its buyer. Most people handling it know the next stop and the amount owed; only the route manager knows the entire journey.

Merra Vesk negotiates access to the most valuable routes and settles disputes between their managers. Captains control their own crews and transport. Storekeepers hold cargo between stages, while clerks maintain the ordinary business records that let a shipment appear unremarkable.

The guild cannot afford to treat every official as an enemy. Some accept payment, some are avoided, and some cannot be bought at all. A route manager who assumes one arrangement will last forever usually loses the next shipment.

The Cloak recruits people who can move things: teamsters, sailors, warehouse workers, clerks, and merchants with useful connections. A member's value is measured by which road or door they can open. Magical knowledge is useful when assessing dangerous cargo, but most members make their living through ordinary transport.

Crews expect payment for risk. A captain who conceals the danger of a load may deliver it once, then find no one willing to carry the next one.

A member brings a useful route, trade contact, vehicle, storehouse, or practical skill.
New carriers complete limited jobs before receiving sensitive cargo or a wider route list.

Access to customers, shared storage, and replacement carriers.
Assistance recovering from a seizure or a closed route.
A share of transport fees and access to goods unavailable in open markets.

Deliver or account for the entrusted cargo.

The Road Account — Managers compare losses and payment at the end of a trading season. A closed route is studied before it is abandoned or reopened.
The Empty Seat — A dead carrier's share is paid to their named beneficiary. The practice is unevenly honored; families remember managers who withhold it.

Merra Vesk — A former caravan factor who remembers a route by its inns, tolls, and people. She will reroute a costly shipment rather than lose a reliable crew, but expects the crew to repay that expense through later work.

Guild Accord — Its regulation and investigations interfere with the Cloak's trade.
Gilded Fang — Bounty and recovery jobs can bring it into conflict with Cloak cargo and hired protection.
Local watches and customs officials — Relations vary by route. A single honest officer or changed posting can undo a long-standing arrangement.

Vehicles, leased stores, trusted carriers, and money held against losses keep the trade moving. The guild's route records matter more than any single headquarters. Vesk changes counting rooms when a location becomes too familiar to rivals or officials.

History

The Cloak began as a transport agreement among carriers who were losing cargo to rival seizures and dishonest middlemen. Pooling storage and payment gave them more control over their trade. The network grew as merchants discovered it could also move shipments excluded from lawful markets.
