Ten years ago the people of Port De Mona lived through an eerie event remembered as the Night of the Mists. A dense, unnatural fog rolled into the harbor without warning, thick as a wall and unlike any mist the locals had ever seen.
Type: Incident / sighting of the Mournful Mariner
When: About ten years ago
What happened: An unnatural wall of fog blinded the harbor; ships crashed into the docks and each other
The sound: A haunting, otherworldly melody heard from everywhere and nowhere at once
The mark: Strange runes found carved deep into the hulls at dawn, undeciphered to this day
Legacy: Sailors have been wary of any mist that rolls in unbidden ever since
Visibility fell so low that ships could not navigate, and several crashed into the docks or collided in the confusion, the harbor loud with creaking wood, shouted orders, and the dull thud of hull on hull. As the fog settled a hush fell over the water, and the sailors still awake reported a haunting melody, ethereal and cold, that seemed to come from everywhere at once. Some swore they saw shadowy figures moving through the fog, gone when approached. When the mist cleared at dawn the strangeness did not end: symbols like runes or glyphs were found etched deep and precise into the hulls of several ships, as if cut by a steady hand. No one in town could read them, and the local scholars had no answer. The marks were soon laid at the feet of the Mournful Mariner, some calling them a warning, others a curse laid on the ships and those who bore them. The incident left a lasting mark, and to this day the sailors of Port De Mona watch any unbidden mist warily, most of all on quiet, moonless nights.
