The City of Three Faces | Capital of the Vundrold Free People’s Alliance
Marazhan does not rise—it accumulates. Layer upon layer, stone upon stone, lie stacked like memory across the rocky spine of an island nestled within Tethiral Bay, a stillwater lagoon where the great rivers of the Vundrold basin meet the uncertain tides of the Silvered Expanse. It is a city born not of conquest or divine will, but of pragmatism. The fertile delta lands to the south were spared the weight of stone and mortar, and so Marazhan took root instead on hard, unyielding rock, rising in tangled defiance against the sky.
There are three cities in Marazhan, and each walks atop the bones of the last.
The lowest layer, the Foundation, sprawls across the entire landmass. Its labyrinthine streets drown in shadow and salt, where the canals choke with gondolas, barge cargo, and the half-sung curses of dockhands and smugglers. The warehouse district to the north, exposed to daylight, thrums with the labor of commerce, where river barges from across the alliance unload their wealth beneath creaking cranes and vigilant ledgers. Here, goods flow freely—but not without cost.
Above this, the middle layer, known as the Veins, snakes across sixty percent of the city’s surface. Raised walkways and stone-arch bridges carry artisans, scribes, and spies through slanted corridors of light and shadow. It is the city’s circulatory system—the space between power and poverty—where deals are made quietly and betrayals whispered behind silk curtains. The walls here listen, and secrets are a more reliable currency than coin.
Then there is the topmost layer, the Crown, which sprawls like a gilded parasite over only a quarter of the city. It gleams in the eternal sunlight, an opulent hive of estates, galleries, towers, and vaults, high above the stink and clamor below. This is where councilors toast each other with blood-slicked smiles, where the merchant princes of the Ledger count futures in gold, and where the city’s elite pretend the world ends at their feet.
But even sunlight casts shadows. Beneath Marazhan’s grandeur runs a current of corruption, resistance, and violence. The Azure Sentinels patrol the docks but rarely leave dry. The Ghostwalkers slip between layers like spirits, trading in leverage, blackmail, and silence. The Black Tide rules the under-channels, its smuggling routes hidden in drowned crypts and abandoned flood tunnels. And in the places no light touches, the Gilded Abandon, those exiled by the city they still love, plot their strange and weary redemption.
To walk in Marazhan is to gamble with every step. Fortunes rise and fall like the tides, and even the stone remembers who stood above and who drowned below. Here, “sunlight above” is a blessing, a prayer, and a boast—while “shadows below” is all that follows failure.
The drizzle begins not as rain, but as condensation—suspended in the warm, mist-soaked air that clings to the worn stone of the Veins. The clouds hang low, heavy with humidity and the scent of moss, ink, and distant salt. Somewhere far below, the Foundation breathes in the tide, but here, the world narrows. Footsteps echo against damp flagstones. Paper umbrellas tilt against the breeze.
You walk through corridors of half-light, past shuttered offices and curling incense smoke. A wheeled palanquin clicks and groans across a nearby bridge, pulled by a silent porter whose eyes never leave the street ahead. Rain beads on iron railings and slips between the stones of old murals that no one bothers to repair. Water does not flood the Veins—it seeps.
A trio of lanterns flicker ahead beneath a crooked awning: crimson, gold, and green. A coded message for someone who isn’t you. Not today. The walkways narrow, growing quieter now. Fewer vendors. Fewer watchers. The secrets here do not shout—they wait.
The estate sits on a tilted rise between two structures half-claimed by age and ivy: a collapsed conservatory with shattered stained-glass eyes, and a shrine whose god has long been forgotten. The gate is wrought iron, tarnished. Its hinges do not creak, but they resist.
The brass nameplate beside the door once bore the name “Dr. Koprulam Nuso.” It has been polished smooth. Not scratched, not defaced—removed with care. As if the city itself wishes to forget.
You arrive one by one, or in quiet pairs, beneath the drizzle. None of you speak at first. But your eyes linger on the same things. The shadows. The stillness. The way the light pools just wrong near the base of the wall.
The door is unlocked. And behind it, a dead man’s voice waits to speak.
