Cobalt Weeper

Description

Rising tall along riverbanks, mist-choked valleys, and the shores of still black lakes, the Cobalt Weeper is a hauntingly beautiful tree bathed in shades of deep sapphire and pale silver-blue. Its bark is smooth as polished stone, veined with faint luminous streaks that pulse softly beneath the surface like flowing water trapped beneath ice. Long curtains of blue-tinted leaves cascade from its branches, swaying with a slow, mournful grace even when no wind stirs.

At dusk, entire groves shimmer beneath the fading light, their leaves reflecting the heavens above until the forests resemble vast oceans of blue glass.

Most prized of all is the sap. Thick and brilliantly cobalt in color, it seeps from natural cracks in the bark like liquid gemstone. The scent is intoxicating—sweet like sugared berries and summer rain, yet chased by an intense bitter finish that clings heavily to the tongue. Merchants, brewers, nobles, and alchemists alike covet the sap, often paying fortunes for even small sealed vials.

Travelers speak in hushed tones of ancient groves where the trees endlessly “weep” rivers of blue beneath moonlight, staining the roots and surrounding waters in deep indigo hues.

Information

Cobalt Sap:
The sap of the Cobalt Weeper produces one of the richest natural blue dyes in the Shattered Lands. Cloth treated with it takes on a deep sapphire hue resistant to fading, even after years beneath harsh weather and sun.

Bittersweet Vintage:
When fermented or refined, the sap becomes a highly sought-after liquor with an intensely bittersweet flavor. Nobility often serve it during funerals, treaties, and winter feasts, as the taste is said to embody both sorrow and comfort.

Bluefire Oil:
Distilled sap burns with a smokeless cobalt flame. Wealthy cities use the oil in ceremonial lanterns, while artificers employ it in enchanted inks, alchemical reagents, and arcane catalysts.

Dreaming Draught:
Consuming raw sap in excess induces vivid dreams filled with rainstorms, drowned memories, and distant whispers. Some Watchers believe the trees absorb echoes of emotion from nearby waters and return them through the mind of the drinker.

The Weeping Curse:
Groves of Cobalt Weepers are strangely tied to grief and death. Following massacres or great tragedies nearby, the trees have been known to bleed excessive amounts of sap for weeks at a time, their leaves darkening into nearly black shades of blue. Some claim the groves mourn alongside the living.
