It has been more than 25 years since the Void Echoes were last seen in significant numbers during the Siege of Spellwhisk in 214 A.T.C. Nowadays, only very small-scale incidents occur from time to time, leaving the Voidbreakers in an identity crisis. Most packs have been reduced to mere mercenaries for hire. By 239 A.T.C., the Voidbreaker outpost in Gentlebreeze, city of the Taufolk, now functions as an impromptu "Adventurers Camp." Here, Voidbreakers and allied mercenaries gather to find or enlist for various assignments around Sevenfold, including beast hunts, guard and escort duties, special investigations, or even treasure hunts!
For some time, there's been a request hanging on the noticeboard to explore the nearby ruins of Fallowbrae. Fallowbrae was a small human town destroyed during the Era of Beasts and subsequently abandoned. The general consensus is that there's nothing useful to find there, so the request remains untouched. Now, three relatively new members of the Voidbreakers have been assigned to escort a young scholar Henry to the ruins of Fallowbrae.
Ginny Effilyn, Arvin Quickfoot, and Alaric of Timberheart are members of the Howlbreakers pack, a group of Void Breakers led by Exemplar Kane of Howlstead. On an otherwise slow day in camp, each member is busy with their daily tasks. Alaric, while helping Ruby with weapon maintenance, spots a mysterious Concordia-style caravan, which piques his interest.
Meanwhile, Ginny, gathering herbs in the forest, encounters a lost scholar named Henry. After helping him calm a moose with a honey-glazed cupcake, she invites him back to camp. Henry explains that he’s seeking help from the Void Breakers to explore the ruins of Fallowbrae, an ancient settlement destroyed 250 years ago. His research focuses on the history of the Chambet family and the Theanthropic Convergence. Ginny, intrigued by his story, shares it with her companions when they regroup.
Arvin, after completing his shopping errands for the camp, runs into a luxurious caravan from Leonopolis. Inside, he meets Cedric's flamboyant adoptive brother, Ramarito. Ginny is invited into the caravan and receives a fortune-telling from Ramarito's sister, Ramarika, who hints at Ginny’s potential connection to the realm of Dreams.
The group then faces an intense training session as Cedric, another member of the Howlbreakers, enchants scarecrows to mimic Void Swarmers, forcing them into a sudden battle. After successfully completing the challenge, they receive their next mission: escorting Henry to the ruins of Fallowbrae.
After a quiet evening at Breakers Tavern, Ginny, Arvin, and Alaric return to camp for dinner joining other wolffolk. The group overhears overhears a tense argument between Examplar Kane and Vanguard Riven, Kane and Riven have been keeping their relationship private from the rest of the camp. They hear the two arguing, where Kane mentions an unbreakable arrangement tied to his bloodline.
Later, the group receives their assignment. Escort the scholar Henry to the ruins of Fallowbrae, where he intends to research an ancient family that once opposed 'The Throne War.' They’re tasked with clearing the area, setting up a camp, and ensuring Henry’s safety. They receive strict orders to protect Henry, as they won’t be paid if he dies. They also have the day to gather supplies and prepare for the journey, including a visit to Jenny’s father’s potion shop.
At night, Arvin has a short encounter with Ramarika who reads his fortune, predicting that he’s on a path of transformation, symbolized by a Comet. Meanwhile, the group discusses their plans, including how to deal with dangerous creatures like owl bears and a big troll.
Henry provides a map of the area and reveals that he possesses four crystal pylons, which is powerful magitech, Alaric wonders about it, because people shouldn't be allowed to have those without permits. As the group prepares for the expedition, buying supplies and borrowing armor from Wallace’s shop.
They also speak with Exemplar Kane, expressing concerns about Henry’s research and his suspicious behavior. Kane tasks them with keeping an eye on him while maintaining diplomatic caution, as anything happening to Henry could spark a political crisis.
