The Freelands of the South

The Freelands of the South is a multi-cultural state formed by various immigrant groups who once clashed across the vast deserts surrounding the Crater. After years of conflict, these groups united under a single kingdom ruled by Governors who answer to a king or queen. Today, the kingdom is home to a diverse collection of races including Brutgors, Serenians, Dwarves, and Humans.

Campaigning in the South Freelands

Despite their name, the Freelands of the South are as perilous as any harsh land in Vitallia.
Each city is surrounded by a massive desert known as The Red Ocean, which stretches from the Crater to the western rivers.
Freelanders hold slaves, torment captives, and maintain brutal arenas where gladiators fight to the death for public entertainment.

The People of the South Freelands

Freelander culture varies drastically from city to city due to the mixture of races that shape the kingdom. Life is difficult—resources are scarce, traditions harsh, and the environment unforgiving. The people grow tough, resilient, and accustomed to the strict social rules the land imposes.

Useful Lore

The Freelanders carry the heavy responsibility of guarding the Crater, a source of monstrous threats.
They maintain powerful armies to defend their borders on multiple fronts, constantly battling creatures that emerge from the Crater’s depths.

The Dangers of the South Freelands

Surviving the South Freelands is a challenge.
Governors hold near-divine authority, and commoners' lives hold little value. Strength is a celebrated virtue, especially due to the culture of the gladiatorial arenas. However, gladiators rarely live long, and even the most successful never rise above the status of lowborn commoners.

South Freelander Customs

  • The King or Queen is the supreme authority and rules from the capital.

  • Governors, chosen by the monarch, rule the cities in their stead.

  • Governors must represent different races, honoring the kingdom’s history, and each may shape their city according to their racial heritage.

  • Aristocrats are wealthy individuals whose riches dictate their status, not lineage.

  • Middle-class citizens are granted small plots of land to produce goods, paying tribute to local lords.

  • Low-class citizens work on others' land for minimal pay and have limited rights.

  • Slaves receive no payment and possess only the rights granted by their owners.

  • Gladiator slaves earn payments based on their reputation.

  • People of mixed race are called Desert Children, and they are highly esteemed.

  • Large numbers of outlaws roam the wilds beyond the cities, known collectively as Desert Pirates.
