"In a nation of storms and long winters, the grim and stoic Karrns are accustomed to enduring hardship without complaint." — Eberron: Rising from the Last War
Karrnath's communities are built to endure. Sturdy walls surround even small villages, and every settlement maintains a capable militia. The architecture is heavy, symmetrical, and martial — monoliths, obelisks, statues, and severe stonework give many Karrnathi streets the feel of museums or memorial grounds. The climate shapes everything: casseroles, soups, stews, sausages, cheeses, dark breads, and strong ales dominate the table. Thick woolen clothing and solid cloaks are universal in the countryside; in the cities, fashion emulates the sharp lines and dark fabrics of military dress uniforms. The Code of Kaius limits civilian access to weapons — the well-to-do may strut around in decorative armor, but the sword at their side will be peace-bound unless they hold a governmental position. The locations below represent the most significant sites in the kingdom, but every Karrnathi fortress, barracks, and frozen crossroads has its own grim stories to tell.
The capital of Karrnath is a city-fortress on the edge of the Nightwood — its walls and towers bristle with weapons of war, and military marches through its streets serve the dual purpose of bolstering Karrn spirits and unsettling foreign diplomats. The forges of Korth produce some of the finest arms and armor on the continent. Korth is also the most industrialized of Karrnath's eight duchies; each year, more workers use their general education to staff factories owned by the wealthy, equipped with arcane devices produced by Cannith East under the direction of Zorlan d'Cannith. The lack of freedom under the Code of Kaius has thus far suppressed investigation into the workplace hazards these new factories pose.
The city is divided into five wards separated by riverside bluffs, each managed by appointees under Civic Minister Hyran ir'Tennet, who oversees all civilian matters. Security falls to General Yorin Thauram and the White Lions, the city's military police — though they maintain a semi-official policy of leaving the Low Ward to its own dynamics.
Kaius governs from Crownhome, the fortress-palace in the Highcourt ward, flanked by two massive rocky pillars and outfitted with siege engines capable of covering the Karrn River. The original structure predates Karrn the Conqueror; it has been restored and heavily fortified multiple times and has never been breached in a siege.
The Commerce Ward is dominated by the Tower of the Twelve — an enormous thirteen-spired structure floating above the city, housing arcane laboratories, dragonmarked house meeting rooms, and the institutional backbone of the Twelve consortium. Korth was the first Karrnathi city to build an airship docking tower, completed in 993 YK, and it quickly became the preferred transit option for every dragonmarked baron except Kwanti d'Orien. Major house enclaves — Cannith, Deneith, Jorasco, Kundarak, Medani, Orien, and Thuranni — all maintain significant presence in the city.
The Temple Ward holds the Cathedral of the Sovereign Host, heavily damaged during the war and recently rebuilt grander than before, with a magically animated starscape consulted by scholars of Aureon for divination. The people of Korth are strong Vassals; the Blood of Vol never achieved the same popularity here that it did elsewhere in the nation. Kaius has banned open Blood of Vol worship within Korth, and former Seeker temples have been converted to nightlife and housing. The University of Korth also occupies the Temple Ward — not a school of arcane magic, but the nation's premier institution for history, language arts, mathematics, and philosophy. Its history department is particularly renowned, and it experienced a significant boost in prestige during the war when the hostilities with Aundair cut students off from the University of Wynarn.
The Low Ward is Korth's open wound: lawless, neglected, and home to the city's immigrant communities — Talenta halflings, Cyrans who bypassed New Cyre, Mror dwarves. The city has a semi-official policy of neglecting the ward, driven first by slumlords and reinforced by businesses seeking cheap labor. Multiple gangs operate here: the Dead-Gray Knives (orphaned Cyran petty criminals), Utig's Hammers (a dwarven protection racket), the Silent Masks (halfling catburglars wearing Talentan disguises), the Third Street Swords (dishonorably discharged veterans), and the Adamantine Fist (warforged bruisers-for-hire). The Low Ward's most useful criminal is a forger known only as the Midwife, who produces identities for clients across Khorvaire — impeccable work, limited scale, and a strict insistence that nobody bring too much attention to her door.
Known as the City of Night, Atur is the only grand duchy in Karrnath and the historic stronghold of the Blood of Vol — an independent bastion of the faith long before Kaius I turned to it, its autonomy negotiated ages ago in exchange for containing the dangerous Mabaran manifest zone at its heart. The city sits above that zone and draws on rich onyx mines from the nearby Ashen Spires; these resources made it the center of wartime undead production. Lightning rail cars full of coffins traveled to Atur and returned with standing-room-only legions of skeletons for the front. The catacombs beneath the city now hold those same legions in accordance with the Treaty of Thronehold's disarmament provisions, where they await new orders. Some warlords despise the Blood of Vol or fear that the undead stored beneath Atur could be turned against Karrnath, but they also know that seizing the city would prove disastrous without the knowledge to contain the manifest zone. The City of Night remains inviolate.
The Crimson Monastery — an enormous pyramid of blood-red brick and ebon mortar — is the center of Seeker worship and functions as a deliberate mirror to Aerenal's Shae Mordai. Headed by the mummy-priest High Priest Malevanor and staffed by skeletons and oathbound mummies, it channels the manifest zone's energies through its pyramidal form. Malevanor, who has been dead for over fifty years and was personally involved in the wartime program that produced Karrnathi undead soldiers, has publicly condemned the Order of the Emerald Claw and insists his parishioners despise the Claw's violence — though outsiders are understandably skeptical.
The True Shaper's Demesne, formerly the Demesne of Shape under House Phiarlan and now under House Thuranni following the Shadow Schism, operates from Atur as well — a multi-level structure with galleries, studios, and workshops from which the finest sculptors, painters, architects, and costumers in Khorvaire have trained. Khorvaire's best artists learned their craft in this building, and House Thuranni's role in the Karrnathi art scene extends far beyond espionage.
In daily life, Atur is unusual even within Karrnath. Color-coded skeletal laborers clean streets, till fields, and perform menial tasks, maintained by magewrights known as bone wranglers who take genuine artistic pride in painting their creations. Citizens commonly donate their bodies to the state at death — a practice that strikes outsiders as macabre but that Seekers regard as the final expression of community service. Festivals of undeath and vitality draw pilgrims, performers, and intelligence agents from across the continent. The headquarters of the disbanded Order of the Onyx Skull — pioneers of Bone Knight technique before Moranna dissolved them in 976 YK — sits just outside the city walls, seized by the state and currently uninhabited.
Rulership of Atur is not hereditary. The position is granted to the Warden of the Lake of Shadows, a meritocratic title earned by surviving the festering darkness beneath Nighthold. When the Warden dies, any citizen of the duchy may attempt to claim the title.
Fort Bones stands in the County of Odakyr, Karrnath's southernmost county and the site of some of the most potent Mabaran manifest zones in the nation outside Atur. The fort began as the town of Orozlsom, transformed into a necromantic research base when Kaius I embraced the Blood of Vol. Researchers Gyrnar Shult and Malevanor developed the Odakyr Rites here — the specific necromantic techniques that produce the distinct Karrnathi undead, which can only be performed at sites with strong Mabaran manifest zones.
The fort's current structure is the product of destruction and deliberate reconstruction. In 990 YK, Valenar druids invoked an earthquake that leveled the keep and what remained of the surrounding town. After a Karrnathi reprisal, the bones of the slain elves were mixed into the mortar and the fort was rebuilt — a free-standing monument to necromantic innovation, constructed literally from the bodies of those who tried to destroy it.
Today Fort Bones garrisons primarily Karrnathi undead soldiers. No lights burn here; the dead rely on darkvision. The fort remains one of only two sites in Karrnath — the other being Atur — where the Odakyr Rites can be performed. Officially it is a functioning military outpost. In practice it is among the most important and secretive necromantic sites in Khorvaire. Fortresses like it dot the hilltops of Karrnath, watching for signs of enemy encroachment even since the war ended — but none carry the same weight of dark purpose.
Rekkenmark is Karrnath's academy city, built around the institution that Prince Karrn founded at Galifar I's direction — the premier military institute in Khorvaire, where for over eight hundred years every future general from every nation studied before the Last War set former classmates against each other across a century of battlefields. The Academy sits above a Shavarath manifest zone that enhances battle acuity and training. During a youth's mandatory military service, their performance on the Brightblade holiday — the festival of Dol Dorn, when local commanders organize competitive tournaments — influences the quality of their assignment. The best end up at Rekkenmark.
The city suffered considerably during the war. Aundair captured it early; Kaius I retaliated by destroying portions of the White Arch Bridge in 899 YK to sever the Aundairian supply line. Saboteurs finished the bridge in 928 YK. Thrane wyvern raids ravaged the city multiple times. Getting to Rekkenmark is now considerably harder: built against steep cliffs with limited water access, its freshly constructed airship docking tower receives few routes compared to Korth. Most westward travelers approach via water to Korth, then take the lightning rail.
The Academy has reopened to international students under an uneasy atmosphere — the question of whether today's cohorts will repeat what their predecessors did hangs over every class. When Kaius was crowned in 990, the school pushed its graduation back a day so students could attend the coronation in Korth, then cram the lightning rail back to Rekkenmark. Graduates earn membership in the Order of Rekkenmark and receive an opal ring. The Order's head is First Warlord Gruden ir'Erdei, Duke of Vulyar; the Order has formally expelled its surviving non-Karrnathi members and now functions to build camaraderie among Karrnathi officers, cutting across the vertical loyalties that the warlord structure otherwise produces.
Karrlakton is the birthplace of Karrn the Conqueror and Galifar I — the smallest of Karrnath's duchies, a south-facing city on the Cyre River, separated from the dead-grey mists of the Mournland by that waterway alone. The mists are visible from the city. Their presence has weighed heavily on the minds of residents since 994 YK.
The city's defining institution is House Deneith, whose headquarters Sentinel Tower dominates the skyline — a stern edifice of angular stone radiating martial authority, one of the most heavily defended fortresses in Khorvaire. Surrounding the tower are training grounds, barracks, and smithies; it serves as the formal headquarters of the Sentinel Marshals, though most are abroad at any given time. House Deneith continues to recruit from across Khorvaire but especially in Karrnath, where mandatory military service has created a large pool of qualified recruits.
The Duchy of Karrlakton is governed by Duchess Olivier ir'Mira, a decorated veteran who graduated Rekkenmark with top marks in battlefield leadership and dueling, has survived multiple assassination attempts including one from the Order of the Emerald Claw, and is an ally of the crown despite private reservations about Kaius's choices. She has no interest in restarting the war.
Karrnath's largest single industrial plant is in Karrlakton — a foundry along the river, formerly a temple to Onatar, now owned by a merchant named Loyal Daison. It received raw materials by lightning rail during the war and converted them to arms and armor; today it produces civilian construction materials under conditions widely acknowledged to be brutal. Daison exploits the Code of Kaius and the labor pool of Cyran survivors — not Karrnathi citizens — whom Duchess Olivier has thus far chosen not to protect.
The Order of the Blackened Sky, founded by the late Philip ir'Mira and now commanded by Evetius ir'Denka, is based here — originally a martial-artifice order that pivoted after the Day of Mourning to protecting Karrnath's Mournland border with alchemical methods. They are always seeking independent groups willing to enter the mists for intelligence and recovery work.
Karrnath is also known for its glass production. The sand along the Cyre River has the right purity and properties for glassmaking, and while House Cannith produces the tools, each piece of glass is still handmade — magewrights use magic to create shapes and colors that mundane techniques could not produce. Karrnathi glass is a recognized export, and the river that separates Karrlakton from the Mournland also provides the raw materials for one of its finest crafts.
Vedykar bridges the divide between eastern and western Karrnath, a small duchy sharing borders with five others. Its eastern half is occupied by the Shadowmount Forest; its western half contains the city of Vedykar and farming communities in the resource-rich soils south of the Ashen Spires. House Jorasco is headquartered here — the Jorasco clan's matriarch resettled her people here centuries ago and founded Resthold, which became the institutional foundation of the Healer's Guild. The city hosts the University of Vedykar, one of the older academic institutions in Karrnath.
Vedykar's ancient infrastructure is unusually functional for a city that old, built atop Dhakaani ruins whose engineering has outlasted everything built atop it. The town of Vulyar, in the southernmost duchy, has become the fastest-growing settlement in the nation following the construction of the Cannith East Facility run by Viceroy Renilda d'Cannith, which produces conductor stones for lightning rail construction across eastern Khorvaire.
The Ashen Spires are Karrnath's primary mineral mountain range, rising west of Vedykar and providing the onyx that fuels Atur's necromantic operations as well as substantial deposits of precious and practical metals. The tallest peak, Mount Tharzil, approaches ten thousand feet. Alpine terrain transitions from forest to grassland depending on elevation; mundane predators like saber-toothed tigers share the range with chimeras, perytons, and other monstrous threats.
The Spires are not a site of settlement but a site of extraction, patrol, and quiet danger. Survey teams from Vedykar and Atur make periodic excursions into the higher elevations. Not all return.
The Nightwood is a massive forest adjacent to Korth with deep ties to the Plane of Mabar — not merely dark in reputation but actively dangerous, its manifest zone allowing corpses to naturally reanimate as zombies, wights to bargain with the spirits of Mabar, and vampires to shelter within. It has harbored them since the first Aereni elves arrived from Karrlakton and were driven north to what became Atur. Ancient mysteries lurk within its depths, unseen by humanoids for eons — dark and twisted woods tied to Mabar, bountiful wilds tied to Lamannia, ever-frozen forests tied to Risia, and connections to Khyber that could give footholds to all manner of corruption.
The Nightwood also produces Nightwood Ale, the most recognizable Karrnathi export beverage. Plants that survive in Mabaran zones carry unusual properties that local brewers have refined into the drink's distinctive thick, dark, full-bodied character. International shipments travel under House Deneith guard by long-standing agreement. It is perhaps the only product of a Mabaran manifest zone that anyone in Khorvaire actively looks forward to receiving.
"Criminals fleeing Korth's justice sometimes attempt to disappear into the Nightwood rather than face execution. The lucky ones simply die." — local proverb
