The Republic of Vathys occupies the southern coast of the Bay of Arvessa, where a narrow band of fertile coastal country is pressed between the sea and the Seleric Range. Its settlements follow bays, river mouths, mountain valleys, and mineral seams rather than broad interior plains. Nearly every major city faces the water. Nearly every important inland town exists because something valuable was found beneath the mountains.
Vathys was already a mining centre under the Arvessan Empire. Its iron, copper, and silver helped supply imperial mints, workshops, arsenals, and shipyards. After the empire collapsed, the port councils and mining cantons resisted both royal claimants and military governors. Their eventual union produced a republic whose constitution deliberately divided power among cities, cantons, commercial institutions, and elected magistrates.
Modern Vathys is one of the wealthier states in the Arvessan Basin. Its steel mills, copper works, nickel refineries, banks, and mineral exports generate considerable revenue. That prosperity conceals serious weaknesses. The republic grows too little grain to feed itself, lacks enough timber for its mines and industries, and depends heavily on foreign shipping. Its national government is also weaker than its wealth suggests. Cantonal rivalries and powerful industrial houses make coherent policy difficult.
Vathys is an urbanized coastal republic backed by mineral-rich mountains. It has no standing army and has maintained that policy for nearly 200 Cycles (about 292.2 Veyrathian years). Defence on land rests upon cantonal militias, police formations, difficult terrain, and diplomacy. At sea, however, the republic maintains a large and highly professional coast guard. The service protects customs revenue, patrols fisheries, suppresses smuggling, operates lighthouses, conducts rescues, and provides the republic’s principal defence against maritime coercion.
The republic exports metals, machinery, tools, rails, wire, and refined industrial materials. It imports grain from Ilyriaz and timber from Valessar and Cerathene. Most of its overseas trade is carried aboard foreign ships.
Vathys is wealthy enough to matter, divided enough to hesitate, and strategically exposed enough to fear every neighbour’s alliance.
