"Wounds in reality that bloom like dark flowers, then wither... or take root"

Overview

The Abyssal Blooms are temporary, magical phenomena that manifest randomly across Eldranis like corruption flowering from Void-touched soil. Unlike the more permanent Elder Depths, these dungeons are ephemeral manifestations, often appearing for just days to several months before withering away—or worse, taking permanent root as Stabilized dungeons.

They can emerge almost anywhere: dense forests, bustling city streets, tranquil lakes, or barren mountaintops. There is no pattern to their appearances, no warning save for the subtle signs that precede their blooming—animals fleeing, shadows moving wrong, the ground feeling somehow hungry underfoot.

"The air grew colder as I pushed through the thick mist, and there it stood—an ancient archway, half-swallowed by the forest, its stones carved with runes that seemed to glow with a life of their own. The vines clung to the doorway like skeletal hands, trying to pull it back into the earth, but the faint light from within beckoned me closer. I felt a shiver run down my spine, a whisper in my ear that wasn't quite my own. This place was a secret, hidden for a reason, and here I was, about to cross a threshold that time itself seemed eager to forget."

Characteristics

Unpredictable Themes: An Abyssal Bloom's interior defies local reality. Adventurers might discover a frost-covered cavern filled with ice elementals in summer's height, or a labyrinth of living roots and vines in an arid desert. The Void's influence shapes these spaces according to no earthly logic.

Magical Instability: Wild magic zones, gravity shifts, and bursts of elemental energy make these dungeons particularly treacherous. Reality bends and warps within their confines, following rules known only to the Abyss.

Temporal Displacement: Some contain portals to other realms or offer glimpses into Eldranis' past or future, making their rewards especially prized by scholars and seers.

Mechanics

Stability System

  • Initial Stability: Roll 1d6+2 (3-8 range) when the bloom manifests

  • Daily Decay: Roll 1d10 each day. If ≤ current Stability Score, reduce by 1

  • Collapse or Stabilization: When Stability reaches 0:

    • 01-60: Bloom withers completely, leaving no trace

    • 61-00: Takes root as a Stabilized Dungeon (×1.5 multiplier)

Player Influence

  • Destroying Void Anchors: -1 to -3 Stability (accelerates withering)

  • Cleansing Rituals: -1 Stability per successful ritual

  • Void Corruption: +1 Stability (dangerous but extends exploration time)

Warning Signs (24-48 hours before manifestation)

  • Animals fleeing the area or acting erratically

  • Shadows moving independently of their sources

  • Magical items flickering or malfunctioning

  • Ground feeling soft, hungry, or somehow wrong

  • Whispers in dead languages on the wind

  • Sudden temperature drops or unnatural weather

Dungeon Hearts

Within each Abyssal Bloom lies a Dungeon Heart—a powerful Void Anchor that serves as the bloom's core and anchors it to reality. These crystalline structures pulse with chaotic energy and emit auras causing unease, hallucinations, or worse. Destroying a Dungeon Heart can cause the bloom to wither immediately, but they are heavily defended by creatures and magical traps.

Common Dungeon Heart Types in Blooms:

  • Pulsing Heartstones: Crystal formations that beat like living organs

  • Corrupted Totems: Wooden or stone pillars covered in shifting Void runes

  • Void Mirrors: Floating shards reflecting twisted realities

"And then I saw it—the heart of this forsaken place. A jagged crystal, pulsating with a sickly green light, suspended in a web of twisting roots that seemed to writhe like serpents. The runes etched into its facets were the same as those on the archway outside, but here, they throbbed with power, alive with some dark purpose. Shadows danced around it, whispering secrets I couldn't quite grasp, filling my head with a dreadful, mesmerizing hum. I could feel it pulling at me, tugging at my very soul, urging me to step closer… to touch it… to surrender."
