"Echoes of glory from before the Cataclysm, now touched by Abyssal shadow"

Overview

Ancient Ruins represent a tragic confluence of history and horror. These are genuine pre-Cataclysm structures—palaces, temples, fortresses, and cities built by civilizations that flourished before the Nihilith invasion. The Void's touch has transformed them from monuments to achievement into labyrinths of danger and mystery.

Unlike other dungeon types that are primarily Void creations, Ancient Ruins carry the weight of authentic history. They offer glimpses into the world that was, overlaid with the corruption of what came after.

"The murals still showed their original beauty beneath the creeping shadows—scenes of harvest festivals, royal coronations, children at play. But the shadows moved wrong, and the painted figures seemed to watch us pass. History and horror walked hand in hand down these forgotten halls."

Characteristics

Layered Corruption: Original architectural purposes remain visible beneath Void influence, creating unique environmental storytelling.

Historical Artifacts: Higher probability of discovering pre-Cataclysm items, documents, and technologies.

Cultural Significance: Many ruins hold religious, cultural, or ancestral importance to local populations.

Academic Value: Universities and scholarly institutions pay premium rates for research access and artifact recovery.

Types of Ancient Ruins

Sunken Cities: Coastal metropolises claimed by rising seas and time
Desert Tombs: Royal burial complexes buried beneath shifting sands
Forest Temples: Sacred groves and shrine complexes overgrown by centuries
Mountain Fortresses: Defensive citadels carved into remote peaks
Underground Complexes: Vast subterranean networks of unknown purpose

Special Considerations

Preservation Ethics: Destroying artifacts or architecture may anger academic institutions, local communities, or descendant cultures.

Research Partnerships: Academic institutions offer substantial bonuses for intact artifacts and detailed documentation.

Cultural Sensitivity: Some ruins remain sacred to local populations, requiring diplomatic navigation.

Historical Mysteries: Often contain vital clues about pre-Cataclysm events, lost technologies, or the nature of the original Nihilith invasion.
